BOUQUET To our Canada Post letter carrier who rang our doorbell to alert us to a water leak and flooding on our property. Thank you for your care. And a second bouquet to the City of Nanaimo public works department for sending out a service truck in less than 30 minutes. Thank you for your rapid response.
BEEF To the plant thief. Every August my family places potted flowers at my dad’s memorial bench in Buttertubs Marsh. It is our way of remembering him and we always hope they stay there until the middle of September when my mom passed away. Every year they disappear when we go back to water them every day.
BOUQUET All I hear is that no one phones back, people can’t get estimates for home renovations, workers don’t show up. David Stalker Excavating, Ben West Contracting and Vos Landscapes show up, do quality workmanship run a very safe work site. Thank you.
BEEF To the NRGH staff member who told me ‘I don’t have time for your problem.’ You couldn’t even be bothered to patch me through to someone that might be able to give me direction to get my husband a life-saving injection.
BOUQUET Many thanks to the kind lady who found me on the trail collapsing from heat exhaustion, called the ambulance and waited. Also to the two kind dog walkers who stayed in case of needed first aid, and to the kind paramedics who made the trip to emergency comforting and calming.
BEEF Why do some drivers at the intersection of Bowen Road and the old Island Highway choose to stop at a red light over the line where they can either get hit by a train or have the crossing arm come down and hit their car? You put all the drivers around you in jeopardy when you do this.
BOUQUET To the Rotary Club of Nanaimo North and sponsors for the Family Fun Day on Labour Day weekend. Hope you do it again next year.
BEEF Sad to read about all the motorists, especially the police cars passing a broken-down vehicle. I know that many of us are fearful of stopping when we don’t know the person waving their arms. What if another person in the car was having a medical emergency and no one stopped?
BOUQUET To Shanz at London Drugs. So helpful with my purchase of a Fitbit.
BEEF Today I went to one Nanaimo library branch that had listed online a particular book I could borrow for seven days and then to the another branch to pick up a book that was placed on hold for me. Neither book could be found by the librarians. I would like to think that this was a system glitch, however, what are the odds?
BOUQUET Thank you to the witness who acted so responsibly when the front of my car was plowed into when it was parked on the waterfront. The hit was done on purpose.
BEEF To the neighbours for showing their true colours, when you swore at this PTSD senior. I just asked you kindly to lower your industrial noises on Labour Day evening. You are rude bullies.
BOUQUET To organizers and supporters of the Fair Care Alliance to push for improvements at our hospital. Let’s hope the provincial election candidates see this as a top priority.
BEEF To Nanaimo gas stations. Why is gas $165.9 in Vancouver when they also pay transit tax and the price in Nanaimo is $170.9 with no transit tax?
BOUQUET Thank you to those on my paper routes who were concerned for my well-being when you stopped getting your paper on Tuesday nights. With the new schedule, I am only able to deliver to a few houses as I make my way home from the warehouse.
BEEF Dog bites woman twice, antibiotics were later prescribed. The dog, a beige labradoodle, was on leash. The owner was surprised and apologetic. The dog patrol has been notified.
BOUQUET To Vanessa, who not knowing us, gave us a cucumber and a zucchini when we were walking by her home. Made a zucchini loaf and enjoyed the cucumber with dinner. Thanks, delish.
BEEF To drivers who are incapable of negotiating the curve on Rutherford Road near Hammond Bay Road. The city finally placed posts to separate the two lanes. There were 15 posts. Nine have already been taken out. Plus a section of the metal fence on the right hand lane was also eliminated, probably by a collision. There is no excuse for this. No wonder our vehicle insurance rates are so high. Slow down.
BOUQUET To the dedicated volunteers at Fair Care Alliance demanding better health services for half the population of Vancouver Island. The rally was enlightening and sobering for us citizens north of the Malahat. We have two overworked cardiac specialists at NRGH trying to help heart attack patients with outdated and possibly dangerous technology. We demand a cath lab now.
BEEF To the city for picking morning rush hour to paint lines on Hammond Bay Road and for no notice or signage. We can’t mark our streets at night?
BOUQUET To Mahalo Veterinary Hospital and Dr. Plettl for making a very difficult time a little easier and even though Emmitt was a new patient, you made us all feel like family, we will always be thankful for your kindness.
BEEF To the selfish, lazy folks who leave their drinks all over stores, and also those who throw half-full drinks into the garbage. Please remember your full drink is inevitably going to leak and cause a big mess.
BOUQUET Thank you to Ken and Shirley at Debaren Apartments. Thanks for all your hard work at throwing all us tenants a barbecue. You outdid yourselves again. The food was awesome. You two are the best managers always looking after your many tenants.
BEEF To the food truck owner who is constantly abusive and aggressive toward the grocery store staff. They are members of the same community you ask to support your business.
BOUQUET To all the children who visit the gnome and fairy homes in Neck Point Park. We are so happy that you come by to say hello and share your special gifts at our reception centre, the ‘Give a Little, Take a Little’ home door. We love the park and enjoy living here and look forward to your visits. See you soon. Enjoy the magic.
BEEF To the school buses that stop in front of NDSS in the morning to drop kids rather than going around back like they used to. Why the change? Traffic on Wakesiah backs up when everyone turning into ND stops for the the kids to cross the parking lot.
BOUQUET To our hard working, overworked medical staff. You guys are superstars. A polite suggestion: if you are running behind, please let us know, and an apology goes a long way.
BEEF To the City of Nanaimo. There are more and more cars on our streets but you continue to narrow roads, take away turning lanes and reduce parking spots.
BOUQUET To a fellow passenger on the Pacific Coastal flight from Kelowna to Nanaimo. Warned that the flight might be diverted to Victoria, we asked the gate staff to see if anyone would like to share a taxi from Victoria to Nanaimo. Without hesitation, Mark found us and offered a ride, as his wife was picking him up. Thankfully, our amazing pilot managed to land at YCD after all (in difficult conditions, so a bouquet to him too). Mark’s kindness to strangers has not been forgotten and we will do our best to pay it forward.
BEEF To the councillors who do not support local workers in the forest industry. The mills are major employers and taxpayers.
BOUQUET To the great workers on Nanaimo Regional General Hospital’s sixth floor, Ali, Linda, Ursula, Gamma and Jaz, a real angel, for their care to my friend who had knee surgery. Bless them for having to work in such deplorable conditions short-staffed.
BEEF One of our kids had to come home partway through the day to clean up after a nasty encounter with something on the school playground. The ‘no dogs’ signs are clearly posted and are there for a reason. Please, if you choose to ignore the signs, or if you feel the rules don’t apply to you, at least have the decency to clean up after your dog.
BOUQUET To Woodgrove Mall for hosting an Elderdog information table. So many people stopped to chat and it was a wonderful for the mall to support a great community organization.
BEEF When I retired I assumed my life would be modest. No trips or fancy car, just enough to pay my bills and survive. Because of COVID, everything has gone up substantially, I can no longer afford to live on my pension. So at 70 I need to get a job so CEOs can have record-breaking earning. What middle class?
