BOUQUET To my beautiful and loving wife Lily for working full-time at the same time as caring for our senior dog who is transitioning into his elder years. He is requiring a lot of extra effort and work. She does it all with patience and a smile.
BEEF To Island Health. My elderly mom needed home care after an accident and we had one health care aide who was rude and very unprofessional. Secondly, a young man was sent to give my mom a shower without her approval, prior notification or even discussing whether she was comfortable with this arrangement. Treat seniors with respect and dignity.
BOUQUET To the McDonald’s restaurant that turned off the satellite radio playing the most annoying sound that they call music by my request, allowing their in-store diners to eat in relative peace and quiet. I don’t know how their staff can endure their work dealing with auditory hazardous conditions.
BEEF To the cashier who gave the person in front of me in line a gift card ‘in honour of 9/11.’ While you may have made the young woman’s day, you know whose days weren’t made by the tragic events of Sept. 11? That’s right, the 2,977 people who died during the attacks.
BOUQUET Patrick’s Handyman Services built us a very nice wooden fence. Professional and skilled in Hammond Bay. 100 per cent recommended. Thank you.
BEEF To the political parties waving their party placards at crosswalks, busy intersections, construction and congestion. As if we drivers don’t have enough distractions. It was very stressful passing through Bowen and Northfield. The only horn I want to hear is a warning. Not your support horns. I’m still sick about the stress you gave me.
BOUQUET To the man who called 911 and tried to calm me when I was in a serious car wreck by the Charlaine boat launch. The first responders and NRGH staff were so great and really restored my faith in our health-care system. Also bouquet to the RCMP officer who attended my son’s school and my home to notify my family. You were so helpful, much appreciated.
BEEF Accessible parking at the event was not accessible, and up to 50 per cent of the spaces were taken up by people who do not have a disability placard displayed. Staff said they have no ability to ticket or ask people to leave. Poorly organized.
BOUQUET To our Canada Post carrier, Kim. We’ve been blessed to have you since moving to the Uplands area and it’s pretty clear how much you’re adored within the neighbourhood. You know everyone and their pets, you keep an eye out for people who live alone and it’s obvious how much you care. We hope we get to see you for a long time to come, especially your biggest fan.
BEEF To the so-called tough guy we saw slapping a lone woman, then chasing her through the bushes as she screamed at you to stay away. Hopefully the RCMP caught up with you. We hope the woman is safe – please reach out to authorities for help.
BOUQUET To the city crew and support staff who worked on June Avenue. They were all very accommodating to the ins and outs of traffic the whole time they were redoing the sewage and water pipes. Thank you.
BEEF To the self-righteous driver who shouted out ‘tailgater’ to me as they drove by. Perhaps you should maintain traffic speed, signal when changing lanes and if lost or sightseeing, keep in the right lane, which would allow other vehicles to pass you in the left lane. Those actions might result in smoother traffic flow and save you from having to virtual signal your unwanted opinion.
BOUQUET To the graveyard-shift employees at the 24-hour Northfield Tim Hortons especially the ever-present and ever-pleasant window man who while staying awake every night as the rest of us sleep, always has a big smile for his customers. He starts your day off right.
BEEF To the impatient overly self-important driver who passed me on Hammond Bay Road. The very day after a woman was struck by a car in a crosswalk in the same location. I’m driving the limit to give the deer, rabbits and of course people a chance, but this person in a compact SUV was having none of that nonsense.
BOUQUET Recently had some medical equipment delivered and set up. The technician Carl from Island Mediquip was fantastic. Very friendly and informative, he took the time to explain everything.
BEEF The event was poorly organized and poorly run with ridiculous wait times. Many workers are volunteers but give them the training required. Everything was very expensive. It was disappointing that a family event was only for the affluent.
BOUQUET While shopping in the Harewood Quality Foods I accidentally knocked some items off a display when the cart I was in was a bit hard to handle. My movement was a bit hampered and a young lady left her place in the deli lineup to come and help me replace the items on the display. That was a pure act of compassion. Thank you.
BEEF Wake up Canada. The carbon tax, which is working, is the ounce of prevention we all must sacrifice to prevent the opposition and big oil from laying the large pound of cure on our kids and future generations. Remove the carbon tax and big oil will most likely raise the price to fill the gap.
BOUQUET Always so thankful to Taylor at Colville Central Drugs for administering my injection so painlessly and putting so much care into what he does. I have children and being able to move about without bruising and more is plenty to be grateful for.
BEEF To Nanaimo council for rubber-stamping whatever city staff wants, and for AAP No. 3, which is part of hundreds of millions of dollars they want to borrow by 2031. Throw in interest charges to service that debt and property taxes will increase more than what they’re stating.
BEEF To motorcycle riders who lane split and filter at traffic lights. It’s illegal so nobody expects you to come up the side or middle like that. A bigger beef to the government for keeping it illegal.
BEEF To all the parents who coddled their children as they grew into adults. Congratulations, you have created unemployable people. You want to complain all the time about your task and only show up half the time? That’s OK, you’re fired. Again.
BEEF To the neighbour in Harewood who had over 30 cats crammed inside of the home where they were illegally squatting. You invited your friends to turn our quiet street into your own squatters’ paradise and you got what you deserved, but the cats didn’t deserve any of it.
BEEF To the empty promises about a new hospital tower. Why should it take 8-10 years to build? What happens in the meantime? It took only 14 months to build the Empire State Building. The tower should be an emergency joint effort with contributions from all political parties, not just for the benefit of one.
BEEF To the verbally abusive physiotherapist who I paid for two years with no results. You’d ask ‘what did you do?’ at each appointment, clearly blaming me. Bouquet to the wonderful chiropractor who resolved those same issues in eight treatments.
BEEF To the entitled cyclists who choose the vehicle lane, then pedestrian crosswalk, or whatever suits them. Further beef to city councillors spending our tax money on bike lanes, end-of-journey bike lock-ups and events and prizes for cycle-to-work week. It’s time for a hefty bike licensing fee to pay for these expenses.
BEEF To the city for wasting more tax dollars to create a ‘traffic-calming’ nightmare on Extension Road. It’s a dangerous obstacle course that has not helped cyclists and will cause accidents and damage in bad weather. It needs to go.
BEEF To B.C. Ferries. You make living here insufferable. Last night you left my 82-year-old disabled mother – on an oxygen tank, travelling alone – to sit for a three-ferry wait to drive an hour home to Abbotsford. She was here celebrating her great-grandbaby’s first birthday. She got home at 2 a.m.
BEEF To the people out there who assume and judge people without knowing the facts. I’m sorry you have horrible lives and pick on people because you’re jealous they are happy. You have no idea what people go through to get to where they are in life.
BEEF To the weight loss centre that messes with your metabolism. Save your money everyone, you’ll gain every ounce back and more when you start adding normal food items again, like a bit of fruit or a treat.
BEEF To the city, for the hairpin curve on Rutherford hill with sidewalk metal guard rails and fixed plastic pylons on the centre line that is currently wrecked. This curve is not navigable with heavy trucks and was destined to be obliterated, which it was.
