Beef to the guy who randomly addressed me with a misogynistic insult on the bus, what did I do to deserve that? I don’t even know you.

BOUQUET Thank you to the kind young man who paid for my chocolate goodies at London Drugs when I had left my credit card at home. It was totally unexpected and I feel, undeserved. I will gladly add that amount to my donation to Loaves and Fishes.

BEEF To the strata that does not have a maintenance person to check the water pump distribution panel nor the electric panel. This has resulted in our water reservoir being emptied several times and it takes days to refill. Time for a change in strata council and perhaps this will now light a fire under them to hire and maintain a person who values the owners and residents of our stratas.

BOUQUET Just finished a procedure at the Nanaimo hospital’s endoscopy department. With everything that is going on in our health-care system I was well taken care of and the staff were amazing. With this in mind, I would like to thank nurses Jenna, Theo, Robyn, Tran, Kristina and Christie and Dr. Ramkumar. May you get the recognition you all deserve.

BEEF I was upset to see this headline. I thought we, in Canada, had risen above black-white distinctions. We have always been proud of the diversity in our population, but this headline just lowered our baseline. We’re not American – please don’t lower us to their level.

BOUQUET To Nanaimo Water Gardens and Landscaping for your generous donation so that our Grade 7 class could attend a Nanaimo Clippers game. We are so grateful for your kindness.

BEEF To the resident or residents of the north-end house painted a bizarre colour. When you are inside you don’t have to see the colour, but your neighbours have to see it every time they look out their window.

BOUQUET To the Nanaimo Harbourfront Library for its fantastic new arrivals, staff picks, and monthly themed suggestions. I love your curation. Thanks so much for your passion for the printed word.

BEEF To the News Bulletin for the headline. What the heck difference does it make what colour the MLA is? He was voted in because he is educated, intelligent, caring, and has the attributes and values voters were looking for in a candidate. Your newspaper should not have these kinds of headlines. Just shows that racism is alive and well in B.C.

BOUQUET To the beefer regarding merging at road construction. People really do need to learn to merge like a zipper.

BEEF To the pizza delivery driver. Yes, we all like hot pizza. Tailgating and speeding in the school zone are both dangerous and illegal. No one likes that with their pizza.

BOUQUET To Anne, Shalaine and Dylan’s mom who never once hesitated when our Jeep battery died at Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens. Anne immediately came to our rescue and helped jump-start the Jeep. Shalaine and Dylan’s mom were there to help if needed. A kind gentleman also ensured we were OK. Kindness is still out there and we are so grateful.

BEEF To all the irresponsible dog owners in the south end. This street used to be so quiet and lovely. The past few years everyone who has moved to this street has brought a large dog; they all seem untrained and neglected. Barking at all hours of night and day, every day. What a shame. Train your dogs, walk them, or don’t get one.

BOUQUET Gratitude to two kindly fellow dog walkers in Colliery Dam Park, who helped me to locate and rescue my little Mudi girl dog from a narrow rock crevice, hidden in mosses. At 80-something, I had a hard time even to find out where she was, but a concerned young woman clambered up the huge mossy rocks, and an equally concerned and helpful fellow dog walker came to the rescue, bravely wriggling down to his waist into the crevice.

BEEF To the City of Nanaimo. There was another serious accident at the intersection of Enterprise Way with the old Island Highway, as a direct result of the city’s elimination of the right-turn lanes on Enterprise Way and Metral Drive, backing traffic up to the highway intersection, all following from the stupidity of impeding traffic flow, inherent to the city’s ‘complete street’ mania.

BOUQUET Kudos to Dr. Wilder for attempting to set up an overdose-prevention site at the hospital. The conservatives and the religious right appear to not get that addiction is part of health and the real social disorder is the failing of health to deal with such issues in a compassionate, inclusive manner.

BEEF Racial identity seems to be a fixation of NDP/Liberal politics. Whether our MLA is black, green or white is irrelevant to me, his qualifications/abilities and intention to do a great job are the only factors that matter. Racism should be avoided.

BOUQUET Appreciation to B.C. Hydro crews that worked so hard to bring back our power after that horrible storm.

BEEF To the beefer beefing about automatic gunfire coming from the military range on voting day. Your military secures you the right to vote. As a family member of military personnel, I cannot believe you would be so ungrateful to our servicemen and women, who require regular training and practice.

BOUQUET Thank you to Country Grocer on Bowen Road for hosting Forest Park’s annual Grade 7 hotdog fundraiser. With your amazing support, along with our generous community, we raised $1,350 toward our year-end activities.

BEEF To the people who feed the rabbits who have taken over our city – they’re feral, not wild. Let nature take its course and may only the strong survive.

BOUQUET To Bob, the man who cooked many marvellous meals for Nanaimoites for over 32 years at Tania’s Restaurant. We miss your smiling face and want to thank you for your excellent meals made with great care. You are the best, thank you.

BEEF To people-pleasing behaviour. Grow a backbone and put up some boundaries already.

BOUQUET To all the B.C. Hydro workers who worked tirelessly – through the night, morning, and afternoon, often at great risk – to restore power to Nanaimo and beyond after the bomb cyclone. Losing electricity and then having it restored is a powerful reminder of gratitude for what we have in our community.

BEEF I used to spend a few hundred dollars at the local Christmas craft fairs, but out of principle, I refuse to pay a mandatory door cover charge to get in to buy things. There exists no valid excuse for this, so vendors will not see our money.

BOUQUET To all those B.C. Hydro crews who go out in the nastiest weather to restore power to the many affected by outages. I may sit in the dark of my house while it cools and feel a bit sorry for myself, but B.C. Hydro line crews are heroes, working in the dark, wet and cold of our storms.

BEEF To the B.C. government. All I see in cabinet is a shuffling of problems and optics. What ever happened to solving all crime and cancelling the carbon tax?

BOUQUET To the linemen and hydro utility workers for the prompt round-the-clock responses following the bomb cyclone and resulting havoc. We all appreciate your hard work and dedication. Thank you.

BEEF To the ridiculous names that are being given to regularly occurring seasonal events. Bomb cyclone? No, it’s a bit of wind and rain. Polar vortex? No, it’s just going to snow lots. Stop making up phrases so your job sounds cooler than it actually is.

BOUQUET To Marcia, who gave me a gift card to distribute to a person who you felt needed some help because of the bomb cyclone that hit the Oceanside-Nanaimo area. A fellow resident of your community was very appreciative. She was shocked that someone would do this for another person. So thank you Marcia, you are a gem in this world.

BEEF To the guy who randomly addressed me with a misogynistic insult on the bus, what did I do to deserve that? I don’t even know you. Congratulations on showing such disrespect towards women. Does that make you feel better about yourself?

BOUQUET Thank you to the B.C. Hydro employees who have worked days and nights fixing the power outages all over Nanaimo. Your hard work is very much appreciated. Thank you.

BEEF To the advocate for the smoking of freebase cocaine. A crack high lasts about 15 minutes which is then followed by a drastic low. This is all the encouragement that someone who is addicted needs to get money by any means necessary to buy more. Theft is a popular option. So yes, I care if strangers smoke crack.

BOUQUET To all the front-line food service workers who were inundated with extra patrons due to the power outage. The lines were long, but you kept them moving and got everyone on their way.

BEEF To the city. Just when I thought I heard it all now we have time and money to dedicate to park signage inclusivity?
