Beef to the NHL and its broadcast partners. The ads on the boards that are constantly changing while the play is going on are a major distraction. We couldn’t begin to count the number of times we have had to rewind our PVR due to a tire or other nonsense spinning down the boards and distracting us from the game.

BOUQUET To Tracey at Quality Foods on Turner Road in the café. She is always so helpful, friendly and funny. I love it when she’s working there.

BEEF I see a lot of comments on Metral Drive. I live on the 3300 block of Hammond Bay Road and the sidewalks or lack thereof is quite an issue. Why are there not safe sidewalks for children? To walk your dog is very scary. Why is the City of Nanaimo not helping us?

BOUQUET To Tony N. who helped my daughter when she was in medical distress at the Horseshoe Bay ferry. Our family is forever grateful for your kindness and getting her the necessary help. She is now seeing a cardiologist in Vancouver since Nanaimo unfortunately doesn’t have one. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

BEEF To the NHL and its broadcast partners. The ads on the boards that are constantly changing while the play is going on are a major distraction. We couldn’t begin to count the number of times we have had to rewind our PVR due to a tire or other nonsense spinning down the boards and distracting us from the game. Maybe you could change the ads only during a stoppage in play.

BOUQUET To Nesvog Meats and Sausage Co. for the salt beef. My Jigg’s dinner came out delicious and the pea soup even better. I’ll be back as a loyal customer. Thanks.

BEEF To transit for wanting to increase fares when all you have to do is get your riders to pay. Every time I’m on a bus many riders get on for free. It is unfair to those of us who work hard and pay. Why should we pay for free riders?

BOUQUET To the sea cadet bugler who played O Canada at the Nanaimo Yacht Club sail past. Job well done.

BEEF To the pilot of the dual-engine turboprop who thought low-buzzing my neighbourhood from 5:30 a.m. onwards was a good idea. It really wasn’t.

BOUQUET To Chelsea W. at Coastal Community Insurance for her excellent customer service. I will be back next year. I felt so reassured because of her knowledge.

BEEF To the residents still parking on Opal Road. And now, residents are regularly parking on Tunnah Road. It’s unsafe for pedestrian traffic, never mind actual traffic.

BOUQUET Recently my wife experienced a cardiac episode. NRGH emergency department took her right away. Quickly, they took the necessary tests to establish she did have a heart attack. Without their speedy action she would not be here today. To the greeter, admitting clerk, doctors and nurses at NRGH and Royal Jubilee Hospital, my family will be forever indebted to you.

BEEF To my ex-partner, who after several years decided it was easier to hide things and cheat with multiple people for the last year and a half. Found out on my birthday of all days. Serves me right for believing you were not the person people warned me about.

BOUQUET Congratulations on being the best community newspaper. Wish you could influence our paper. I look for your paper every time I’m in Nanaimo.

BEEF To the aggressive and verbally rude lady who yelled at me and my husband on Mother’s Day for crossing the road at an intersection, stating ‘does this look like a crosswalk?’ along with profanity. You might want to review your driving rules – every intersection is an unmarked crosswalk.

BOUQUET To the trades. White collar jobs will be taken by AI and robots long before blue-collar jobs. Ain’t no robot fixing no plugged toilet anytime soon.

BEEF To the live music venue for not enforcing the cover charge. $10 is a bargain to listen to the incredible musicians who ended up walking away with less than half of the pay they were expecting. Additional beef to the patrons who just wanted a quick drink before going to see a DJ.

BOUQUET To all employees at the Nanaimo News Bulletin. We appreciate your continued work on keeping Nanaimo residents well-informed.

BEEF Stop speeding at schools. Put in raised crosswalks.

BOUQUET Thank you to Angela, Diana and another person who sat with me when I tripped and fell at Beban Park. Thanks to the husband who located mine. Kudos to paramedics Don and Chuck. My total reversed shoulder replacement is healing.

BEEF First, I agree with the Front Street beef, as do many, many citizens. Second, it raises the obvious question. Are the anti-noise bylaws, particularly for unmuffled cars and motorcycles, being enforced? Third, would council please inform the public whether enforcement is regularly occurring, tickets are being issued and paid, and orders to properly muffle noisy vehicles are being made? Nanaimo citizens deserve quiet enjoyment of their city.

BOUQUET After 60 years with the Medical Arts Centre, I will soon be without a family doctor. Dr. Calvin is retiring. Thank you for all your years of service, and enjoy your well-deserved retirement. Also, thank you to all the staff of the clinic for all your hard work over the years.

BEEF To the construction worker who takes his break and sits and smokes a joint. If I see this again I will call your company and report you. The safety of your co-workers is at stake.

BOUQUET To all enjoying the plethora of water activities on our coast. Beef to all those not wearing life jackets. You are not only putting yourself at risk, but all those who will try to save you, most being volunteers. Be water smart.

BEEF Only in Nanaimo would the city have active large construction projects on every exit and entrance out of the city. What a disaster.

BOUQUET Thank you so much to all the folks who helped search for our dog Charlie in the Hammond Bay area. He was found and is now ‘grounded.’

BEEF The north end store has a poorly designed parking lot, challenging to get into on busy days. Fortunately there are many other stores nearby that sell the same kind of products.

BOUQUET To Carolyn at Country Grocer, her immediate family and many others for their amazing generosity in funding a service dog for me. Mission accomplished. The dog, French, is here, and he’s a life changer, making so many tasks possible which had not been possible previously. I am forever grateful.

BEEF To the car and truck commercials on TV showing aggressive and reckless driving. Isn’t there enough mayhem on our roads already without showing more of it to sell their products?

BOUQUET To mayor and council. You do not want your legacy to be how many fences, rocks or community safety officers you financed, but how you created a city where everyone was safe and cared for. As the world heats up we will all need to come together and prioritize community building. Please walk some of your talk.

BEEF To the City of Nanaimo for the poor maintenance on the main trail around Westwood Lake. The trail has been washed out between bridges 9 and 10 with pipes exposed for months. Numerous phone calls and no action taken. I guess all the money has been used up on the parking lot.

BOUQUET As a first-time client, I was very impressed with the excellent service and value I received from Nanaimo Autobody and Glass. Definitely a local business worth supporting.

BEEF It seems an incredible amount of dog walkers don’t know what to do with a poop bag. All over my south end neighbourhood, poop bags have started appearing in hedges, on lawns and gardens, in the middle of the sidewalk, and all over the school property and the park trails. Poop bags are not biodegradable, they go in the garbage.

BOUQUET To Dr. Talbot and all the staff at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital for their extremely compassionate, professional, and timely care for me during and after my abdominal surgery. Many thanks especially to nurses Renata and Chloe for their kind post-operative attention. My recovery at home is going well. Many blessings to all of you.

BEEF To numerous dog owners I see walking on the Harbourfront Walkway trailing panting dogs with their tongues dragging on the ground. Please bring water for them. It is a long walk in full sun on hot pavement before you get to the merchants who might or might not have left out dog water bowls.

BOUQUET To the servers, kitchen staff, and especially the young busing staff at Asteras Greek Taverna. Restaurants are a fast-paced and high-anxiety environment. Your hard work does not go unnoticed by the patrons of this delicious and popular spot.

BEEF Not sure who decided to allow a sporting event on Mother’s Day at Westwood Lake. No traffic allowed at the lake until 2 p.m. and even then, the first parking lot was closed for the remainder of the day. Families wanting to spend the day at Westwood with mom and grandma were out of luck. Maybe next year pick another Sunday.

BOUQUET Thank you to the local business that values a sense of community. You went above and beyond by providing pizza lunch for my class, just because you wanted to. They loved it. What a treat. Your commitment to serve our community is an example for us all to follow.

BEEF Our property tax has gone up by 46.5 per cent in only five years. Keeping up with inflation over this time period, the rise in taxes should have been 18 per cent. You have increased taxes by more than two and a half times the rate of inflation over those five years. This is completely unsustainable, your residents’ pockets are not unending. Control your budget, listen to your residents, and stop spending unnecessarily.

BOUQUET To the staff at Thrifty Foods in north Nanaimo, thank you for your kindness, your friendliness and your efficiency. It’s always a pleasure to shop there.

BEEF To customers who open up brand-new sealed makeup to use as personal testers. You cause so much waste. Don’t open it until you’ve paid for it, no one wants to buy something someone’s stuck their fingers in.

BOUQUET To the motorcycle traffic officer for doing such a thorough job. You deserve a brand-new high-vis uniform so you can be easily seen. Safety first.
