BOUQUET To my favourite beefer. Still your No. 11 fan. I agree 100 per cent that bike lanes do not create the kind of frustration as much as those pretentious power cords which I feel like are laughing at me when I try to recoil the miles of unnecessary cordage. Thanks for the reminder.
BEEF A beautiful forested area was clear-cut right to the edge of Nanaimo Lakes Road. What a mess that was left behind with clearly no concern for the environment nor the wildlife, only for your fat wallet. Concerns about climate change are being preached everywhere but obviously not to the corporations that need to be held accountable just like everybody else.
BOUQUET To seniors finding motivation to exercise. There is no need to buy special equipment to exercise. Using objects around the house such as lifting soup cans for arm exercises. Walking outdoors including slopes and hills. Clothing suited for the weather such as waterproof trousers. Exercising while waiting for the microwave to finish cooking. Suitable exercises can be found by googling expert sources. Motivation is another subject.
BEEF To the bouqueter of the Metral mess. Obviously you don’t even use the road and that’s a good idea – it’s too dangerous.
BOUQUET To the City of Nanaimo, warts and all. People who lament the current state of it must not remember how it was in the ’80s and ’90s, when it was really bad. Is this place a bit rough around the edges? Maybe. Is there work to be done? Absolutely. But is this some lawless den of depravity, as some complain? Not even close. This city is what we make of it, so pitch in.
BEEF To grown-ups who don’t accept responsibility for their actions, blame their parents and play games not allowing grandparents to see them.
BOUQUET To Barry, pharmacist at Country Club Save-On-Foods. Him and the rest of the staff have been helpful and knowledgeable for us for many years. Very grateful for their help over the years of dealing with them.
BEEF At the grocery store, the lady in the nutrition section treated me like I was a bother for interrupting her as she was cleaning the shelves. She was curt and didn’t want to answer my questions.
BOUQUET To the home-care nurses and public health nurses in Nanaimo. We have been dealing with them since the beginning of the year. They are caring, professional and very helpful. A big thank you.
BEEF We’ve been paying carbon taxes for years. Please relate to me where that money has been spent. Thanks.
BOUQUET To the lovely good Samaritan who came out of nowhere to help me change my tire on the side of the road. You are what is right in this world. Thank you.
BEEF To the provincial government. Four times the cost for the new Cowichan hospital. Wow! And that is surely just the beginning. Is anyone held accountable anymore? Who’s getting fired? When can they stop blaming COVID?
BOUQUET To Karuna Vihara Gourmet and all the other generous vendors at the Island Roots Market for listening to me sing for three hours. You are wonderful.
BEEF To the Loch Ness Monster. You owe me $3.50.
BOUQUET To the store manager at Country Club Save-On-Foods who listened and took action after we ordered three party platters for a funeral reception and only received two. I will order again.
BEEF At the park where we live, the management phoned the real estate agent and said she was not to sell a woman’s place. What right does management have of stopping someone selling their home? She also takes people who are here with a real estate agent looking at another home over to one of her new ones she has put up for sale. Who do these management think they are?
BOUQUET To T. in my pharmacy department for her guidance and patience helping me sort out my current medications. You are an angel.
BEEF To the current medical system for the fact I am just starting on my sixth nurse practitioner since I moved to Qualicum Beach in 2022. So frustrating to have to repeat my history, etc., every time I have to ‘train’ a new one. Read up on your new patients before I get into your office please.
BOUQUET To all the beefs out there. I am on your side. Hopefully something is done for all of you out there. Thank you.
BEEF To the woman who is taking books from the little library book exchanges and selling them on the Nanaimo buy and sell, please stop it. The book exchange libraries are for exchanging books, not taking them and selling them.
BOUQUET Thank you to Westcore Electrical and Mechanical and Daniel, Jeff, Corey and team for incredible service following our recent move to Nanaimo and subsequent home renovation. You all went above and beyond for us newcomers.
BEEF To city hall for the bike lane cutting off right-hand turns at Metral and Enterprise Way. Now you have cars backed up waiting at the light. You can’t make this stuff up folks. Not a bike in sight anywhere.
BOUQUET To Tom, a compassionate bystander, who stopped and helped me after a fall along the Harbourfront Walkway that seriously injured my face, resulting in eight stitches. Many thanks and a big hug.
BEEF To the city for refusing to build either a crosswalk or a sidewalk so my kid can walk the 900 metres to their school without getting hit by a car, saying crosswalks give pedestrians a false sense of security, and admitting that speed at the intersection is unsafe. Do better.
BOUQUET To Seadrift Seafood for making a really good chowder. Not only does it taste great, but the portions are swell. Special thanks to the new employee who handled a busy lunch rush spectacularly, I will be eating there again.
BEEF To the City of Nanaimo and NRGH for inadequate parking in and around the hospital. You have now put in paid parking on the streets and now your nurses and other employees who already pay for parking at the hospital can’t find a spot are forced to park farther away or pay again.
BOUQUET I love using the bike lanes in the city. If you connect them, make them safe, people will use them. Remember, a white line on the road is not a safe bike lane. Bravo Nanaimo, keep up the good work.
BEEF To the recent beefer complaining about a dog owner in the hospital district. It’s the dog owner who should be trained. That poor dog has no protection from wind and rain or severe heat. Can you imagine yourself out there for hours? I think you’d be barking too.
BOUQUET Thanks to the folks who jumped into action at Beban Park on a rainy afternoon when I needed a boost, you had me on my way in a flash. I will be picking up one of those booster packs, maybe I can pay it forward.
BEEF To people who are opposing 15-minute cities based on conspiracy theories. It’s literally an urban planning system based on the idea people should be able to do their day-to-day activities without having to travel more than 15 minutes. It doesn’t mean you can’t go more than 15 minutes from your home, it’s that you shouldn’t have to travel a half hour for groceries.
BOUQUET To the person beefing about bus fares. I agree, but potentially getting assaulted isn’t worth enforcing the $2.50 fare. Buy a car.
BEEF To the city. Another tax increase. Enough with the borrowing for ridiculously expensive projects the people don’t want.
BOUQUET Thank you to the gentleman who paid for my shopping at London Drugs. I hope you see this. You obviously were not looking for glory as you took off quickly so I couldn’t say a proper thank you. You touched my heart.
BEEF To the complainer about the rotating advertising on the boards at hockey arenas. Find a new sport.
BOUQUET To Brent, the Canada Post mail carrier for Railway Avenue. Not only do you care about everyone, but you get to know everyone on your route. We couldn’t have asked for a more amazing mailman. We all love you.
BEEF To the transit office for deciding to break up the 50-7-50. It’s been a connection for decades and now you have ruined people’s daily commutes.
BOUQUET Thanks to the two ladies who rushed to help me when I fell at Thrifty Foods. Folk in Nanaimo truly are wonderful. By the way, my wrist was broken.
BEEF To people who take things from the bulk bins at the grocery store then decide they don’t want it. Those items have to be thrown away.
BOUQUET To my cat for laying on my black pants to help ensure the correct white hair-to-cloth ratio is achieved before I put them on.
BEEF The raised crosswalk in front of the courthouse did not make a safer neighbourhood, it did the opposite sadly. I would like to know how the three dirt bikers racing up to the bump, in a roaring group and then flying off doing screaming ‘wheelies’ down to the war memorial makes me and my street safer? I write this a few minutes after this stunt occurred.
BOUQUET To the staff at Mid-Island Liquor store in north Nanaimo, they are always pleasant and helpful.
BEEF To the mother and her young son playing tag and hide-and-seek in a north-end grocery store, that is what a playground is for. Be the parent not the playmate.
BOUQUET To the Nanaimo hospital emergency and cardiac ward for the excellent care I received during my recent stay as a patient. I noted that there was a strong sense of camaraderie among the staff that led to good care of the patients in their care. Health care front-line workers deserve our respect and admiration for the often difficult work they do to bring us back to health.
