Beef to Sarah. You might have many people deceived into believing you are a sweet fun person. Lots of us know you for who you really are: not nice at all.

BOUQUET To V.I. Paddling for putting together the Nanaimo Dragonboat Regatta. Along with various sponsors they put it all together in less than three months. It retained the reason why a good deal of us dragonboat, which is to honour breast cancer survivors, and remember those we have lost. Despite Mother Nature’s curveball, it was an amazing day of camaraderie and fun amongst 30 teams.

BEEF To the bylaw officer sitting in his truck at Departure Bay Beach who either missed or ignored two dogs cavorting on the beach about 50 metres away.

BOUQUET To Donna at Superstore, the front end supervisor. You always go above and beyond for people. Helping others when they can’t pay or just being there for staff. The world needs more people like you in it. Thanks.

BEEF To all those yahoos in cars and on motorcyclists who drive and ride along the Qualicum Beach portion of Highway 19A so noisily and way above the 50 kilometres per hour limit. Dangerous and rude to those of us walking and enjoying the area. Take the fast 110km/h Highway 19 if you are in that much of a rush.

BOUQUET To all Catnap volunteers and their foster homes for all the cats and kittens they help. I have adopted two catnap girls that I absolutely love. Thank you all.

BEEF Although it is truly wonderful to have disability parking available for us seniors, why is the shopping cart return area so far away from the disability parking area?

BOUQUET To Randi M. Last week Randi saved a little girl who was being swept out to sea on a giant unicorn at Departure Bay. This week she came to the rescue of an elderly woman whose head was profusely bleeding after taking a fall in a parking lot. These actions were not out of character for her. Randi volunteers much of her time to our community, and goes above and beyond every day to lift people’s spirits.

BEEF To whoever wrote a beef about pets and pet ownership devastating the environment, comparing a loving, intelligent creature to an SUV. Nothing is more devastating to this planet than human beings.

BOUQUET To Peace and her outstanding staff at medical day care at NRGH. They are often short-staffed but as a patient you never feel it. They are simply the best.

BEEF To the beefer complaining about how we drive here. Move over and let people pass. You could cause an accident.

BOUQUET To all those in town with lifted 4x4s. It’s always better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

BEEF To the RCMP officer in Ladysmith who witnessed a car blowing through a red light at over 90 kilometres an hour in a 70km/h zone. When the light changed the officer drove away, choosing to do nothing. This forum will be just as effective as trying to register a complaint.

BOUQUET To Dane and Culligan for supplying all the drinking water and dispensers for the Nanaimo Dragonboat Regatta. Not only did they supply the water, they gave up their Saturday to deliver it all and set up a booth to greet the boaters. Your generosity did not go unnoticed to the teams, especially the Welly Wave Riders.

BEEF To the lady in our neighbourhood who has two big dogs. Your dogs bark early in the morning and sometimes all day. You have been spoken to and still nothing is done. I don’t want to report you but if this keeps up I will have to.

BOUQUET Thank you to the kind Nanaimo man who helped seven strangers, bringing us cardboard and hot chocolate after we were forced to spend the night outside the ferry terminal at Horseshoe Bay after a transportation company left us stranded after the Stones concert.

BEEF Wake up Nanaimo. It’s fire season. Pipers Lagoon was home to eagle and heron nests. Colliery Dam Park and Morrell Sanctuary are very vulnerable as well. We see people still smoking in the parks. If you love these parks, smarten up.

BOUQUET To Wyatt of Mid-Island Towing for his skilful and respectful treatment of our vintage sports car which needed towing away from a very busy stretch of the highway. His competence, patience and cheerful manner provided assurance in a stressful situation. Appreciation too, to the cyclist who attempted to alert us to what could have been an accident, and to the guys who pulled their vehicle over to ask if they could help.

BEEF To the new girl serving at arts events lately. She is very loud and not at all professional.

BOUQUET To Eileen at Nanaimo Tax Service for all that she does, from one very grateful client. Thank you.

BEEF To Sarah. You might have many people deceived into believing you are a sweet fun person. Lots of us know you for who you really are: not nice at all.

BOUQUET To drivers who wait patiently behind buses as they load and unload. You just saved the life of the person who leapt out the front door of the bus and then dashed right in front of it across the oncoming/passing lane without looking.

BEEF To the woman who lives across the way but wanders through our stratas. Most of us thought we had another bear in our area till we caught you on video leaving us a large pile of no longer mysterious fecal matter. We will be happy to return your ‘gifts’ in generous excess, since clearly you have no intentions of stopping.

BOUQUET Thanks to the kind and generous man who surprised me by pre-paying for my haircut at Great Clips. I had heard some health news just before my appointment so this made me smile.

BEEF To the tenants of the apartment complex. They cannot smoke on their property. Instead, they bring lawn chairs, then proceed to smoke and drink on the neighbouring seniors care home property. This level of entitlement and disrespect is one of many things that is wrong with society.

BOUQUET To the person with the bouquet to Dr. Liu singing along with the song Bad Moon Rising. For decades, I also thought the words were ‘bathroom on the right,’ which I thought made no sense at all to the song. Nice to know I’m not the only one. Thank you, you made my day.

BEEF To the burgundy sedan that ran a red light at the intersection of Bowen and the old Island Highway. Thankfully the little girl waiting at the intersection looked both ways and saw you speeding through. Even if a light is yellow when you start to go through, if it’s red in the middle that means pedestrian have walk signs and oncoming traffic has a green light.

BOUQUET After shopping at Home Depot I accidentally left my wallet in the shopping cart and drove off.  A very kind and honest person handed it into the customer service desk where I located it. Very many thanks.

BEEF Please do not use fireworks, they are banned here and you can put other’s lives and homes at big risk. It is not smart at all. Don’t be selfish.

BOUQUET To those flying the flag upside-down at the overpass. Not for your cause(s), which generally seem silly to the extreme, but for your refusal to bow to the pressures of those who seem to think that, because volunteer soldiers ‘fought for my freedoms’ (i.e., mining and oil rights, oppression of the Middle East, etc.) we shouldn’t ever be allowed to criticize this country or government. It is the right of a free people to express their discontent.

BEEF To the province and city council for turning the former care home into supportive housing. Let the mayhem and crime rain down on the local neighbourhood.

BOUQUET To Hullo ferries for excellent service. My 10th trip was another great one. I feel valued as a passenger and the crossing is so enjoyable and efficient. I met three folks who were travelling on Hullo for their first time and all loved it. Keep up the great work.

BEEF To the consignment shop for allowing my credit to expire and telling me it was a glitch in the system and promising to ‘fix’ the glitch. Months have gone by and you have not replied to my voice mails or to the Better Business Bureau attempting to help me get a resolution. My credit was $150, you have now lost my business.

BOUQUET Thank you to Julie T. and her spouse for posting about free plums from her garden. We felt lucky to get a huge abundance and to share them out to five friends. Thank you for being mindful of this food source and taking the step to share generously with the community.

BEEF To the cyclist coming from Dogwood Road who decided to ride out in front of me. The fact you felt that you had the right of way was not only reckless but it also showed a lack of understanding for basic rules of the road. Next time take a deep breath and wait your turn. You’re lucky I braked in time to stop from running you over.

BOUQUET To our neighbour Linda who is a dog-loving miracle. Offering quality and experienced dog care in our neighbourhood for a very reasonable rate is a blessing. Thank you for opening your home and yard and sharing your tremendous experience and love for dogs with all of us.

BEEF To the province for not providing reasonable care to the citizens of B.C. I reported my stomach problem April 1. After visiting a number of doctors, blood tests, CTs, etc. I’m now told they may have an idea what the problem is in early August, in the meantime, carry on without medication or guidance.

BOUQUET Thrilled that a new Serious Coffee has opened. Welcome, you will be our new coffee place on a regular basis. Great to see Vancouver Island based companies thriving here.

BEEF To whoever removed the two roses that were anchored by a rock in the channel of Pipers Lagoon. They were placed there in memory of my late mom.

BOUQUET To the management and staff at Roto-Rooter Plumbers. Everyone I dealt with was courteous and friendly, from Terry K., the owner, to Wendy, who booked me in for a service call within a day of my request, to Neil and Tom, the plumbers who came to my home. They were very personable, professional and efficient and solved all my plumbing issues. I highly recommend this company.

BEEF To the person who stole the heavy, solid brass bracket with the fireman’s hat ornament from the garage sale. It was intended for a fireman. He is a hero – you are a thief.
