BEEF To the man who yelled a slur at me at the mall from his car, and beef to the bystanders who said nothing. I am recovering from an assault already, and your cruelty has set me back further.

BOUQUET Thank you to Steve and Country Grocer in Cedar for paying for the repair of my car, from a cart at the Cedar store. They were so amazing with their help. Nice to know we still have big stores that actually care about their customers. This is why we shop there.

BEEF To the guy with the camera stuck to his chest video stalking everybody at garage sales lately. There’s nothing scarier than being camera-stalked by a total stranger.

BOUQUET To Dr. Liu and his OR team at the Centre Island Surgical Centre. You know it’s going well when the surgeon is singing along with the background music. Moreover, I’ll always remember that “there’s a bathroom on the right” (sung to the tune Bad Moon Rising). Best surgery experience in all my 75 years.

BEEF To the beefer complaining about the snake at Pride. I wasn’t there but it sounds awesome. Strangers at events are not obliged to cater to your phobias.

BOUQUET To NRGH ER Dr. Marwood. His genuine concern, compassion, and thoroughness in treating my very nasty viral infection won’t soon be forgotten  I sure wish he could be my family GP, but I know his service is vital to those requiring critical care.

BEEF To the high school graduation. Why was O Canada not sung at the event? We are honouring our graduating students who have attended school in Canada. Why has our national anthem been taken away?

BOUQUET To neighbours Mary and Ernie who kindly took me in their care as I was battling a persistent illness while living alone. They opened their home to me, thus easing my stress and social isolation. Their kindness and concern surely helped in my recovery.

BEEF To the incapable drivers who complain about road changes and new infrastructure. Hand in your driver’s licence before you hurt someone and yourself.

BOUQUET A special thank you to Jack H. and his wife for always sharing the lovely photograph cards, at no cost, with so many people. You also deserve a big thank you for the funny YouTube cooking videos during COVID. You are both appreciated, thanks again.

BEEF Nanaimo city council and staff wants to spend tens of millions on a shiny new world-class public works building. Why not use portables and trailers like students and tradespeople have been living with and working in for decades? Double standard.

BOUQUET Thank you so much to Roger F. for showing me around town. Moving across the country can be intimidating, and I was lucky enough to meet him at a great spot called the Landlubber. He’s the perfect Nanaimo man in my books.

BEEF To the Cedar drivers who love to mark up the road with tire marks. What’s the point? Stop it. Respect your neighbourhood.

BOUQUET To my wonderful boyfriend Ryan, you are a beacon of light in a sometimes difficult world. You handle everything with grace, thank you for all you do. I see it and am very grateful.

BEEF Our Canadian soldiers have worn our flag proudly as they have fought for your freedom. It is a pathetic and disrespectful act to display the Canadian flag upside-down on the overpass.

BOUQUET To the terrific staff at the Thrifty Foods pharmacy at Longwood Station. The staff is knowledgable and friendly and go out of their way to help you. Have had them call to see if a new prescription is giving me any issues. As a disabled senior, I get my prescriptions delivered and even their delivery staff are great. I even had a pharmacist deliver a prescription to me after her work day was over, when my refill didn’t make the delivery truck’s schedule.

BEEF To city council. What you don’t seem to grasp is people aren’t against a new public works building. We’re against all the over-borrowing you are doing. Stop burying us in debt.

BOUQUET To Cameo at Servicexcel and the entire team for going the extra mile in a difficult but on-budget heat pump installation including all the office help with the rebate nightmare. The heat dome is approaching.

BEEF To the boat owner who emptied his sewage tank into Departure Bay on the long weekend. All the children get to swim in your poop and make sand castles out of your toilet paper.

BOUQUET I am very thankful to the wonderful nurses and staff at medical day care in Nanaimo hospital. Just recently I had about a five-hour treatment there. The nurses have great wisdom and skill and treat their patients with kindness. Keep up the good work.

BEEF To the person in East Wellington for spilling his old gas all over the road. Your vehicle has a squealing drive shaft that wakes me up every morning, it’s common sense that you need to oil it.

BOUQUET To the people on the overpass at Norwell Drive on Canada Day. It was so great to see people who love our country treating the flag with respect, and one holding an ‘I love Canada’ flag. We were happy to honk for you.

BEEF To the ostentatious food bank volunteer who chose to drive up in a sports car worth $95-155K, give your head a shake, reflect and ask yourself why you want to show and tell your wealth to people who are struggling?

BOUQUET To Ocea at Violet Hair Lounge. She turned this neanderthal into a human being with a simple haircut. Well done.

BEEF To the tire shop. Brought my car in to get brakes changed and they tried charging me $193 for one caliper when a set of two for my vehicle costs $105 at the auto parts store. Quoted me $2,000 to change my brakes, maybe they thought because I’m a girl they could overcharge me and I wouldn’t know any better? Went to Dragon’s Auto and same service was only $800. Big shout out and thanks to Dragon’s, very honest good people.

BOUQUET To Donair Dude in University Village. If you’re looking for a donair that rivals Calgary donair shops (or you’re from Alberta and just miss the comfort of good Lebanese/Greek food) I would highly recommend. They have great two-for-one specials on DoorDash as well.

BEEF There is no single-vehicle parking below at Charlane boat ramp near the lagoon. Adhere to the ample signage and please don’t park below, hang out, swim on the ramp, or launch your plastic toy that can launch anywhere. This is a boat ramp and all that space below is required for trailer parking and manoeuvring.

BOUQUET To Val from Nanaimo Seniors Village. Thank you so much for your patience during the difficult transition from moving from my own home into yours. You were always kind and never impatient although I kept changing my mind about moving in. Thank you for all that you do and keeping in touch after I moved in.

BEEF Unfortunately I can’t see myself buying an electric vehicle until they can safely assure me there will not be obscenely unaffordable battery replacement, and there will be ample cost-effective charging stations without waits. Until then I will stick with the combustion engine until we both die.

BOUQUET To J. at Monte’s Automotive. I ran out of gas and walked to the nearest gas station with my jerry can, but once filled, it was very heavy. I walked across the street to Monte’s Automotive and asked if I could get a ride to my car. J. was at the front desk and he gave me a ride. Thank you.

BEEF To all the owners who have dead trees or shrubs on their property.  Not only are these unsightly, they are also a fire hazard. If you can’t do the removal yourself, please hire someone.

BOUQUET To Andre and Warwick at the Vancouver Island Soaring Centre in Port Alberni. Much appreciation for changing a gift certificate that was outdated due to health issues and circumstances not once, but twice. We’ll be singing your praises to our families as well as friends. We wish you great success.

BEEF The biggest fraud and the longest lie. Baa. Baa. Or should I say cluck, cluck. Farmed animals, they are amusing. Have a great day.

BOUQUET To Craftsman Collision. They fixed my car to perfection. Very professional.

BEEF With the increased development and the noise level consistently increasing with float plane takeoffs, loud mufflers from muscle cars and motorbikes and sirens of either ambulances or fire trucks, could the float plane terminal be relocated?

BOUQUET To the highway crew that did not mow the median and verges of the Island Highway from here to Campbell River so that I got to enjoy the lovely wildflowers and colourful grasses on a recent trip. Why is it necessary to mow them down anyhow? Wait until they are dead and brown.

BEEF To the man who yelled a slur at me at the mall from his car, and beef to the bystanders who said nothing. I am recovering from an assault already, and your cruelty has set me back further.

BOUQUET To B.C. Hydro for supplying needy seniors new air conditioners for their homes. Easy to apply for. Installation included. My mom is thrilled as her room gets very hot in the afternoons.

BEEF To the real estate agents who advertised a condo as a two-bedroom when the second room has no window. I was told there must be a window with a minimum opening area. Tell the truth: it’s a den or spare room, not a bedroom.

BOUQUET I was unfortunate to have to call 911 for an ambulance to come to my assistance and I must say the three EMTs who came were exceptional. I live upstairs and was in a great deal of pain in my leg and couldn’t move it. They managed to get me in their special chair and get me down the stairs and into the ambulance. They showed so much care and compassion.

BEEF To the Metral Drive beefers. Ha! Today I saw a bicycle there.

BOUQUET To Les for staying with me and helping save a life near Mary Ellen Drive, heading north onto the highway. His unwavering support and quick thinking were pivotal. A heartfelt bouquet to you. Forever thankful.

BEEF Why are there so many illegal bike racks on vehicles on our roads and the RCMP doing nothing about it?
