Beef to my friend’s husband. Stop hugging me when I visit.

BOUQUET To my neighbours Ian and Harrison for shovelling my driveway and cleaning off my car during our snowy days recently.

BEEF While we appreciate staffing issues at the hospital, it’s not justification for mischaracterizing input from family members. As you don’t take time to listen, you sure take time to cover your rumps after the fact. As of yet, you still have no idea what it’s like behind closed doors.

BOUQUET To Stone Soup. They have been out every night and even with the snow they have not missed a night in 10 years. Let’s give them our support like they give to people who are homeless and low-income. Thank you all the volunteers of Stone Soup.

BEEF The city website proclaims: “Winter days and nights are going to get warmer, with frost-free days and growing season length both increasing significantly” – clearly the excuse for not spending more money on snow removal. So leave sidewalks impassable, but get those bike lanes cleared for the cyclists who are nowhere to be seen. And keep jacking up taxes to pay for bloated city staff and vanity projects.

BOUQUET To the city snowplow worker who did a great job on our cul-de-sac. We have never been able to get out so quickly after a snowfall. Thank you.

BEEF To the driver of a red truck with B.C. plates, your pride for the U.S.A. clearly shows by your choice to fly the American flag alone from your vehicle. Did you know that flag protocol in Canada indicates that the Canadian flag should take precedence, followed by other flags? All flags should be flown on separate staffs and at the same height, all being of the same size, with the national flag of Canada occupying the position of honour.

BOUQUET To our neighbours who keep our sidewalks clear of snow and bushes so that we can walk our dog. And for the snowman builders who bring the joy.

BEEF I was so disappointed to see ‘Veteran who served on HMS Hood dies at 106’ hidden away on page A12. He was a great part of Nanaimo. Thank you for being our paper. I truly enjoy you.

BOUQUET Through sleet and storm, Liam S. delivers the Nanaimo News Bulletin paper while we haven’t seen two other newspapers all week. Bravo, Liam, what a trooper.

BEEF To the condescending director who told RDN residents to sell their house if they can’t afford high tax increases. Insulting and unacceptable.

BOUQUET To all the courageous women in Nanaimo who don’t feel sorry for jealous, controlling man-babies and take care of their own selves first.

BEEF To my friend’s husband. Stop hugging me when I visit.

BOUQUET To all the staff at NRGH when I was there for a cholecystectomy. You all made me feel cared for and listened to and I appreciate all the hard work you all do.

BEEF To people while walking past others who do not say hi or acknowledge me when I do very clearly to them. I find it so rude in the north end, people, do better. Smile at the very least. Sometimes I even say ‘or not’ after I’ve walked past you. It affects my day, honestly.

BOUQUET Thank you to the grocery stores I visit for bringing in as many non-U.S.A. products as possible. Also thanks for adding more labelling to identify products. Sticking together we will win.

BEEF Please don’t rev your engine at me while I am crossing at the pedestrian lights at Departure Bay Road and the old Island Highway. I would appreciate it if my life wasn’t repeatedly threatened by an obvious racist. Threatening someone with your vehicle is against the law and next time I will make a note of your licence plate as this has happened a few times now.

BOUQUET To former mayor John Ruttan. You have made many contributions to our city and deserve your recent award.

BEEF We need some traffic speed control on Nanaimo Lakes Road from the hydro lines to the animal shelter. This is a residential zone, not the Daytona 500 raceway. Too many drivers over the speed limit, this includes motorcycles to commercial vehicles. The speed limit of 50 kilometres per hour should be reduced to 40km/h.

BOUQUET To Orville at the Moose Lodge who gave all the women a dime on pin for Valentine’s Day.

BEEF To charities that send you unsolicited gifts. Wasting my hard-earned money on junk will not get you more donations.

BOUQUET To the City of Nanaimo, sponsors and artists who contributed to the Luminous Paths art exhibition. It was so much fun to get out on a snowy, dark evening and explore the exhibition with friends as well as adding in a walk to Cameron Island and back.

BEEF Drove by the courthouse to see a person addicted to drugs smoking crack with no worries in world, yet my elderly mother is in the hospital and they won’t let her go after 58 days with no authority stating she needs guardianship. They let him do his thing, but they have my mom off the street.

BOUQUET To Tommy for fearlessly rescuing a kiddo who had sledded into a blackberry bush in the snow.

BEEF There is nothing more ridiculous in the last month than Canadian ‘leadership’ touting buy local. One only needs to look at the label of 99 per cent of all things and it’s obvious this is impossible.

BOUQUET To cab driver 11 from AC Taxi. My daughter took a cab to work and left her Raycons in the cab, during the snowstorm he came back to her work and returned them. She was very appreciative, thank you. 10/10 service.

BEEF If I’m already going over the limit and you’re tailgating, you bet I’m going to slow down even further.

BOUQUET To the City of Nanaimo worker who came a couple days after the recent snow with his digger machine to clean out the catch basin at the bottom of Shadow Mountain Road. In addition to that and without even being asked, he scraped the cul-de-sac giving everyone a ‘launch pad’ to gain speed and get all the way up to Butcher.

BOUQUET We had the pleasure of stumbling on the cozy Felice Café. The pleasant owners were great and the food made it even better, and we’ve enjoyed many a trip back there.

BOUQUET To Craig J. for plowing the top of my driveway after the snowplow had come. You saved this senior a ton of work. Thank you so much for your kindness. From your grateful ex-neighbour.

BOUQUET To Country Grocer on Dufferin Crescent for supporting our Nanaimo Minor Hockey U15 team. Our hotdog sale was a success. We appreciate your generosity very much.

BOUQUET Thanks to Dr. Langelier and staff at VCA Canada Island Animal Hospital for all they did in trying to save our beautiful cat, Cedric.

BOUQUET To Jack and Linda. Wonderful neighbours who check up on neighbours and take them food when they are not well. Shovelling walkways and driveways for those who can’t. Thank you is not enough for what you do.

BOUQUET To the Northfield Tim Hortons. The drive-thru service is consistently fast, efficient, and friendly: ‘Happy Thursday!’ This is truly the best drive-thru. Thank you for making my mornings brighter and keeping me on time.

BOUQUET After a long wait at NRGH, I was attend to by RN Paula. She was very professional, kind, and the most caring nurse I have ever met. She made sure that I was OK by checking in on me often. After the treatment, she walked me to the lobby, making sure I was safe. Your excellent work will be remembered. Thank you.

BOUQUET To Delea Details Painting which did an excellent job on repainting our kitchen cabinet doors; they look brand-new. She also did a touch-up on an outside door frame for me at no extra charge. I recommend her company highly.

BOUQUET Thank you to the staff at Central Island Veterinary Emergency Hospital. They went above and beyond to accommodate my family during a difficult time with our furry friend Jackson. I really appreciate the compassion and understanding of the staff.

BOUQUET To John in Petroglyph Mobile Home Park. Thank you for the help to shovel my driveway. It was very thoughtful of you.

BOUQUET A million thanks to the two angels in disguise who paid for my groceries at Country Grocer. You have no idea how much that meant to me and how helpful and needed.

BOUQUET To city workers for their snow-clearing efforts, and a beef to residents who are quick to complain and criticize.

BOUQUET To the great staff at the New Balance shoe store. Thanks for their expertise and patience to find shoes to fit my now happy feet.

BOUQUET To the rain for ensuring my street is free of snow and ice. And it’s tax-free too. I only wish the city were as efficient and diligent in its snow removal.

BOUQUET To all my friends who weren’t able to make it to the dog park due to snow. Don’t worry, I was thinking about you guys every time when I got there. We can see each other now that the ice has melted.

BOUQUET To the NRGH perinatal staff for their care in the birth of my son and the days after. I had to have an unexpected caesarean and they were so helpful and kind. You are all so appreciated.

BOUQUET Just wanted to send a thumbs up to the folks in Port Angeles.

BOUQUET To Country Grocer for putting the countries of origin on many of their items in their recent flyer including many produce items not from the U.S. It is much appreciated.

BOUQUET To all the neighbours who came out in the snow to clear sidewalks. Whether you grabbed a shovel, shared your tools, or lent a helping hand, your kindness didn’t go unnoticed. It’s moments like these that make the community stronger. Thank you.
