To the Editor,
Re: Complaints show people truly care, Saturday Beat, March 19.
Complaining shows that people care? A lovely sentiment, but not necessarily or usually.
Recently, while byelection canvassing downtown, I was genuinely taken aback by the number and vehemence of folks that, when approached, stopped just long enough to ‘bitch’ about one thing or another, about some perceived injustice done to them by somebody or some (government?) institution.
Most weren’t even aware an election was happening. When queried further, only one knew even the name of even one candidate and not one said they were going to vote.
Sorry, but these people weren’t caring about “making things better for those who come after them”. They were dispirited and disempowered folks who have long since dropped out of constructive discourse. They will not be bringing needed answers.
Constructive, visionary, creative, engaged thinkers just might. Saturday’s voter turnout stats will be interesting.
