It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our mother Vilma Dube. Mom was born in Trinidad, the third of 10 siblings. She and her older sisters took an active role in raising her 8 sisters and one brother when their mother died at a very young age.

Mom studied Philosophy and History at Lucknow University in India. Mom moved to Nanaimo in 1971 with her husband Dr. M. Dube and their three children. She completed a Masters of Education degree at Western Washington State University and a diploma in Early Childhood Education at the University of Toronto.

She taught Kindergarten at Princess Royal School. She was a founding member of Global Village Nanaimo, the Multicultural Society (now CVIMS), and served on the board of Malaspina College-University (later VIU). She was involved in the preservation of Neck Point Park as a community park, the Georgia Strait Alliance, and helped start the Shakespeare Festival in Nanaimo in the 90's.

Mom was active in the United Church, and as a member of the KAIROS movement. She believed firmly in social justice, community activism, and the power of education to change hearts and minds.

Mom is survived by her husband Dr. J. Makhan Dube, her children Ian (Sher), Joy (Marc) and Mark (Elizabeth), grand-children Karina, Kiki, Christopher, Melissa, Gregory, Rebecca, Nicholas, Emily, Andrew, Tara, and great-grand-children Owen, Maddie, Charlie (Brisbois), Emma (Reppich), Matthew, Andrew (Meratla), Amade and Matteo (Dube), Adrian (Dube).

Celebration of life for Vilma will be held on Saturday May 12 at Trinity United Church on 6234 Spartan Road, Nanaimo, at 1 pm.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Central Vancouver Island Multicultural Society or non-receipted donations to Global Village Nanaimo, 2695 Camcrest Drive, Nanaimo, V9T 4V8.
