November 5, 1948 – December 25, 2021
Steve passed peacefully on Dec 25, 2021 while surrounded with love and light by his lifelong friend Lucille, Candace (daughter) and her partner Dylan.
Born in Bellingham WA to parents Stanley and Beulah Jaques. He lived in Terrace and worked as a tow truck driver and then at the U-Drive where he met his wife Bonnie. He moved to Vancouver Island from Vancouver where he continued his career as a Peace Officer/ Commercial Vehicle Safety Enforcement Officer for the next 40 years. If he wasn’t to be found at home you’d find him at a racetrack.
He was a part of the Dwarf Club and built his car by hand and then raced it for 30 plus years. He continued to help out at the tracks on the Island once he sold his car until losing his sight in 2020. He loved the action and could tell you if any car had an issue just be listening and it turned out he was always correct.
He loved children and did many things for many different families throughout the duration of his life. Taking children who needed support under his wing to make sure they always felt safe and gave them the tools to navigate their lives. He was a man loved by all always cracking jokes and giving sarcastic answers. Always willing to teach and listen. He always came up the answer to any problem and gave sound advice to all.
He loved his job and took pride in making sure our roads and drivers were safe. Even if you got a citation from him he gave you the utmost respect and made sure you arrived home safely if he had to tow your vehicle.
He’d pull off motorcyclists just to give them sunglasses so they wouldn’t lose an eye to a bug. He always showed respect to all and made sure you understood he heard what you were saying and that he was indeed listening.
After retiring in 2017 he spent a lot of time tinkering around his garage, going for drives, trying out new restaurants, reading and coaching his daughter at the racetrack, most of all spending time with family and friends.
He was a big part of Cassidy Speedway, Saratoga Speedway and Westshore Speedway. His passing has left a huge hole for all the racing families across Canada and The US as well as his coworkers at the Motor Vehicle Branch.
He was predeceased by his parents Stanley and Beulah and his wife Bonnie.
He is survived by his daughter Candace, her partner Dylan, granddaughter and godchild Lillian who he absolutely adored as she stole his heart he would state the minute she was born, and grandsons Weston and Wyatt as well as loving friends Lucille, Hal, Vince, Murray, Christel and Bonnie and Marie and Jim nieces Barbara, her partner Pat and Kelly.
Due to current COVID restrictions there will be no Celebration of Life at this time. Anyone wishing to make a donation in his memory can do so to Nanaimo Unique Kids Org., Haven Society or Nanaimo Child Development Centre.
