Sidney G. C. Norman passed away on January 5, 2020 in Nanaimo Hospital after a short run with cancer. He leaves his wife of sixty years, Isobel (Sue), along with his three children, Nancy (Takashi and their son Marc), Kara (Salil) and Patrick. He also leaves his sisters Mildred, Trudy and Joyce, and his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Lois and Raymond, as well as many nieces and nephews. Sid was predeceased by his daughter Betsey (1964- 1968), sister Kelly (1932-1982) and his daughter-in-law Michele (1966- 2019). Sid was born at Rabbit Lake, Sask. on November 10, 1934. He and his family moved to Nanaimo when he was 1 - year old and lived in the city throughout his childhood and youth. He moved to the community of Cedar when he was a young man and lived there for the remainder of his life.
Sid had a successful career as an employee of MacMillan Bloedel. He began his 37-years of service in 1953 as a mailboy and worked his way up to manager of the sawmills at the Harmac Division. In 1991, Sid retired as the mill manager of the Chemainus Division. He was also a Chartered Professional Accountant and in 2004 was designated as a society Fellow for his outstanding contributions.
As a young man, he was an accomplished 10-pin bowler. Upon retirement he began researching his family tree. His passion for genealogy and family history research spanned nearly 30 years and has noted accomplishments including a T.V. episode in the 2003 series, Past Lives. He also authored two books on his family's history and conducted many presentations and workshops.
He will be missed by many - A celebration of Sid's life will be held at the Cedar Community Hall (2388 Cedar Rd.) on March 7, 2020, 1 - 4 pm.
