November 18, 1948 - January 17, 2020
Sharon Darlene Tettamanti, 71, of Nanaimo, British Columbia, passed away peacefully in the early morning of January 17th, 2020.
She was born November 18th, 1948, to parents Albert and Edna Birkett (nee Baker) in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.
Sharon graduated from Peacock Technical High School in 1967. Somewhere there is a picture of Sharon with a crown on her head having just won the Miss Moose Jaw pageant. After trying different career paths such as Nursing and Executive Assistant, she chose to join the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. She was one of the first female police officers in the force at the time, one of the leaders who would pave the way for future generations of women officers.
Some of her most memorable assignments in the RCMP was working in protective detail for dignitaries including U.S. Presidents, the Royal Family as well as Pierre Elliott Trudeau and his family. While working as a police officer she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Carleton University. Sharon loved her job and dedicated 25 years of service to the RCMP, retiring in November 1997 due to her disability.
Sharon met her husband Dan in 1975, they were married on August 18th, 1978 in Ottawa, ON and together they raised their two children, Ryan and Adam. After living in Ottawa, Kingston, Sault-Ste-Marie, and Toronto they chose to retire in Nanaimo.
Her passions included chocolate in any form, travelling and cruising, designing her next dream home (there were seven in Nanaimo), golfing, playing bridge, spending time with good friends, and cherishing the time spent with children and grandchildren.
She will be sorely missed by her husband, Dan, her sons Adam and Ryan (wife Lisa), granddaughters Hailey and Kailyn, many relatives and friends including her best friend and guide dog Pluto. Special thanks to her three dedicated caregivers, Lee, Amy and Bryn.
A Celebration of Life is scheduled for 1 pm on Friday January 24th, 2020 at Trinity United Church in Nanaimo, BC. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to The Lions Foundation of Canada, Dog Guides.
