Roy Alexander McCallum

October 6, 1929 to May 12, 2016

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Roy Alexander McCallum of Nanaimo, British Columbia, who died peacefully at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital on May 12th, 2016 at the age of 86.

Roy was born in Nanaimo to John and Hilda McCallum (nee Robinson) on October 6, 1929. After completing high school, Roy worked with his parents on the family dairy farm on Jinglepot Road. Roy enjoyed attending the community dances on the weekends, which is where he met his life partner, Elizabeth (Betty) McCallum (nee Russell) in 1958.

Roy married Betty on February 8, 1960 and remained happily married for 56 years. Together they started and ran a successful home building business, and became friends with many of their clients and suppliers. Roy was an honest and intelligent businessman who easily gained the respect of those he dealt with. They also continued their farming operations in Jinglepot, eventually transitioning from dairy farming to raising beef cattle, a venture which continues today.

During the past 20 years Roy and Betty enjoyed many good times at their cottage at Horne Lake. Their “home away from home”, they loved to spend time at the lake with their family and friends.

Roy is survived by his wife Betty, daughter Marie, son Russell (Heather), grandchildren Colby (Stephenie), Daniel (Caitlyn), Ryan, Mark, Jordynn, Braelynn, and great-granddaughter Scarlett as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Roy is preceded in death by his parents and his brother John McCallum.

Betty McCallum wishes to thank Dr. Allan Kaban and the staff at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital for their care of Roy.

In accordance with Roy’s wishes, no service will be held. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation in Roy’s name may be made to the charity of your choice.
