Ronald James Opheim

November 16, 1953 - June 15, 2011

It is with great sadness that Ron lost his battle to cancer June 15, 2011. Ronnie was born in Saskatoon, Sask & moved to Nanaimo when he was a young man 12 years of age. He has been a Nanaimo boy ever since. He loved his hockey & played for the New York farm team. He and best buddies Larry McNabb & Richard Dutka coached the Nanaimo Clippers for 10 years. Larry & Ronnie later invested in the disco sport shop. Ron’s main niche in life was newspapers, the ink ran through his veins! He started his newspaper career at the Parksville Qualicum News as a sales rep, then migrated to the Peninsula News as publisher, later transferred to Ladysmith Chronicle as publisher. He then was promoted to National Sales on Vancouver Island. He loved to golf, but more than anything he loved his family & grandchildren.

Ronnie is survived by his beloved wife Terry, father Orville, & predeceased by his mother Doreen and by his brother Doug. He is also survived by his brother Dennis (Carol), his five children Brodie, Carly, Maigan, Andrea & Lindsey, as well as his nephew, Cory & family & grandchildren Mya, Mikko, Mackenzie & Dayton.

We all love and miss you Dad (Uncle, Grandpa) - We know you’re on the 19th hole!

There was a celebration of life for Ronnie at the family home on Saturday, June 18, 2011.
