SWANSTON, ROBERT (BERT)

It is with a heavy heart that Bert's family announce his passing on the morning of March 7, 2008 at NRGH. Bert was predeceased by his parents and all siblings, his wife of 60 years, Pauline, and his grandson Kelly McAfee. surviving to celebrate his many accomplishments are his daughters Janet Crapo, Roberta (Ron) McAfee, Margo Swanston, and Carol (John) Wynia; his grandchildren Lara, Paula, Rob, Sjon, and Josh (whom he loved like a son); and his great grandchildren Martin, Avary, and Tyce.

Bert began his journey in 1915 in Sperling, Manitoba, and after graduating public school he traveled to Hythe, AB, in 1936. There he worked the farm machinery business, as a general insurance and real estate salesperson, as Secretary Treasurer for the village of Hythe (36 years), a Commissioner of Oaths and Notary Public (40 years), and he was also a deputy Registrar of Vital Statistics for the Province of Alberta. In his spare time he clerked auction sales for Patterson's Auction Mart.

His community service included being Sec-Treasure for the Hythe Athletic Ass'n (15 years), chairman of the Hythe/Beaverlodge Hospital Board (11 years) and Sec-Treasure for the Hythe Elk's Lodge (25 years). Upon retirement and moving to Nanaimo, BC in 1978, he took the position as Treasurer for the Nanaimo Elk's Lodge until poor eyesight caused him to give up this role. He was an honorary lifetime member of this Fraternal organization and received his 65 year pin.

It was Bert's wish to be remembered at the Elk's Lodge and a celebration of his life will be held in the Nanaimo Elk's lounge at 595 Townsite Rd on Sunday, March 16, 2008 at 2pm.
