Robert Norman McLaren

January 14, 1917 - May 13, 2013

Norm passed away peacefully, at 96 years young, after a brief hospital stay in Nanaimo. He was predeceased by sister, Jessie; brothers, Ernest and Gordon; and daughter, Lyn. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Nita; sons: Jack Foglietta, Jim Foglietta, Brian McLaren and their families. He will be dearly missed by grandchildren: Shannon, Nicholas and Jessica.

During World War II, Norm was a member of the 3rd Canadian Division and helped to liberate The Netherlands. Fifty years later, he and Nita returned as guests of the Dutch people to celebrate the event. For many years, Norm was very active in the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 256 where he was a founding member and served as president. He was also a longtime member of Ashlar Lodge, No. 3, becoming a Master Mason. After his retirement from the Nanaimo Post Office, Norm maintained an active life of golf, curling, cribbage, charity work and travel into his 90’s. He was especially pleased to get his driver’s license renewed at age 96.

Norm was at his best in a group of people and had a keen sense of humour. He was totally devoted to his wife, Nita and will be fondly remembered by his family and many friends at a Celebration of Life service to be held at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 256, E. Wellington Rd. on June 13th from 1:30 – 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Loaves & Fishes Community Food Bank.
