HOOPER,

REV. Lloyd Charles

Born Jan. 25, 1916, in Salford, Ontario; died Oct. 14, 2009, at Dufferin Place in Nanaimo.

Predeceased by his beloved wife Frances and mourned by his loving wife, Ellen, his children – Robert (Fiona), David, Grant (Coreen), and Miriam (Dick), nine grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.

Lloyd was a proud graduate of the Ontario Agricultural College in Guelph, during the Great Depression. He was a veteran of the Second World War, with the Canadian Army and was an active member and Padre of the Royal Canadian Legion, most recently with Branch 171 (Ladysmith). He valued tremendously the comradeship and support that he found in the Legion.

After his return from service as an agricultural missionary in Nigeria, he served as a minister of the United Church of Canada in many small towns in BC including Cape Mudge, Skidegate, Fruitvale, Brentwood Bay, Greenwood, Chemainus, Tahsis, and the West Coast of Vancouver Island.

He was involved in youth work in all these places – in Scouting, 4-H, church youth groups and camps. In his later years he was known as ‘Grampa’ to a whole generation of children at Moorecroft Camp.

After retiring due to illness, Lloyd remained active in many spheres. He was periodically the interim minister to churches in need, he took services in local care homes, he did family and AA counseling, he volunteered with the Open Heart Society, and he loved his garden.

During his long life, he touched countless lives and treasured the friendship of many people.

The family is grateful to Dr. John Potts for his care for Dad and to the staff of Dufferin Place for their many kindnesses during his last months.

A Memorial service will be held at Chemainus United Church on Saturday, October 24, 2009 at 1pm.

Flowers are gratefully declined, but if you so wish, donations may be made to :The First Open Heart Society Of British Columbia, 1580 Pembroke Street, Victoria, BC, V8R 1W2.
