Phyllis Mekkelsen (nee Juthner)

Phyllis Mikkelsen (nee Juthner) was born on March 6, 1919, in Linz, Austria, and passed away at Dover House on January 17, 2016, in Nanaimo, BC. Harald Mikkelsen was born on April 23, 1922, in Snedsted, Denmark, and passed away in hospital on March 10, 2012, in Nanaimo, BC. They were both emigrants to Canada when they met and married in Edmonton in 1956.

Phyllis was an innovative teacher at Jasper Place Composite High School for 25 years before retirement. Harald owned Normik Imports and he and Phyllis loved to travel to clients all over Alberta and BC in their motor home. They retired to Nanaimo in 1991 where they enjoyed the warmer weather and ocean views. Phyllis is survived by her brother Robert Juthner (Erika). Harald was predeceased by sisters Else Mikkelsen and Lisse Christensen and nephew Per Christensen Jr. His sisters Ella Larsen and Maja Sorensen have since died. Harald is survived by sister Grethe Rein. Harald and Phyllis are also survived by nieces Margret Hedegaard, Dorte Pittaway, Patti Clarke, Marietta Louch, Annette Rein, Susanne Sargent, Linda Rein, and nephews Michael Juthner, Hans Sorensen, Soren Sorensen, Leif Sorensen, Paul Christensen and their families, in Canada and Denmark.

Many thanks to the caring staff of Dover House who made Phyllis feel safe and loved. There will be no service. Harald and Phyllis requested their ashes be spread together in Departure Bay.
