It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Philip Reginald Heyward on November 27th, 2017. He passed away peacefully at home with his loving family at his bedside.

Phil is survived by his wife of 63 years, Patricia (Paddy), son Philip Jr. (Myriam), daughter Leesa (Gerry), Grandchildren, Zantraya, Saraya, Amelia, Harmony, Lorne, Josiah, Ella, Eben and great-grandson Jasper.

He leaves behind brothers Jim and Robin, sisters Eileen, Maureen and Janet and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father Leonard, his mother Lillian and brother David.

Phil was born in Bristol, England on September 30th, 1931. He went to work at the age of 14, later serving in the British Royal Artillery from ages 18 - 20, spending time in Germany and Holland.

Phil married Paddy in 1954 and they immigrated to Victoria in March 1963. Phil lived for his family, and willingly sacriced to provide them a good life. He was extremely dedicated and energetic. He made explosives for CIL on James Island and worked for Farmer Construction on the Royal BC Museum from start to completion.

He moved his family to Nanaimo in 1972, purchasing a home there, raising his family, tending the garden that gave him much pleasure. He loved taking his children and grandchildren on adventures to local parks and beaches.

Phil was a founding member of the Nanaimo British Club. He was an avid and accomplished dart player, winning over 40 trophies in competitions throughout Vancouver Island.

Phil was truly one in a million. He touched the lives of many people. He will be dearly missed.
