With heavy hearts we wish to announce that after a one-year battle with cancer, Namphueng (Honey) Barclay too soon shook loose the fetters of suffering. Born in Rayong, Thailand, Honey married Leslie Barclay in 1999, and came to Canada in 2001.
Honey was an elementary school teacher in Thailand, but shortly after arriving in Canada she realized her passion for cooking by opening and for ten years operating Nanaimo's Amazing Thai Restaurant (and its sister in Qualicum, Arada's Amazing Thai Bistro). For the past 8 years she worked as a cook mainly for the Culinary Services Department at Vancouver Island University. Honey's life was fulfilled by family, friends, and cooking, and she loved the beauty of Canada.
Honey is survived by her husband of 19 years, Les, two young daughters, Arada and Alisara, her parents Prasong and Yupin and two siblings in Thailand, and many other relatives.
We want to thank the many dear friends who made her last months happy, Dr. Matthew Toom, and the kind and loving staff at NRGH Palliative Care Ward and throughout the hospital.
For those many she touched, our hearts and lives were made fuller, and now despite the biting emptiness and pain from loss that may afflict us, remember Honey's joy, her happiness, her smiles. Words are not enough.
A celebration of life will occur on Wednesday, June 5th at 5 p.m. in VIU's Malaspina Theatre Lobby.
