July 11, 1931 - March 28, 2022
Mollie Walls of Nanaimo BC passed away peacefully on March 28 2022. Mollie died the way she lived; on her own terms. Mollie was fun, optimistic, caring, attractive, and adventurous. Everyone wanted to be Mollie's friend!
Mollie was born on July 11 1931 in Regina, SK, the youngest of five children born to Marion and Homer Johnson. Mollie grew up in the depression but Homer was an engineer with the CPR so the family was well cared for. The frugality imposed by the depression became a part of Mollie's character the rest of her life. In the summer, Marion would take Mollie and Bill (the two youngest) with her to Vancouver where they would live in a rented house in the West End. Some of Mollie's favourite memories were of playing in Stanley Park all summer long. Mollie's parents died when she was young and she was thereafter raised by a family friend, Sadie Simms.
Mollie bore 8 children (all still living), 17 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. While raising her children in the '50s, '60s, and '70s she always found time to be socially active, either with Great Books classes, beekeeping clubs, light opera, local hiking, Elderhostel, cooking meals for Redwood Courts Fitness Club, tap-dancing, water aerobics, cross country skiing, yoga, Spanish lessons, gardening and preserving.
In the early 90's she met Don Walls at a Nanaimo Thursday Hikers event and at the age of 60 her life began a new chapter. Don and Mollie spent 26 wonderfully happy years together. Don and Mollie lived an adventurous and socially active life, which included numerous wilderness paddling, cycling and hiking adventures across British Columbia. They travelled extensively and made new friends everywhere they went. Mollie climbed Mount Kilimanjaro and swam in the Indian Ocean off Zanzibar; and this was on just one of her trips to Africa! Don died in 2018 but Mollie continued her busy social life and spent time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the German Cultural Centre (71 Caledonia Avenue, Nanaimo) on Sat April 30 beginning at 1:00 pm.
