Mina Jane Philip (Cowan)

July 5, 1940 ~ October 21, 2012

With heavy hearts and great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Mina Philip. Predeceased by her loving, radiant daughter Kathleen Beattie earlier this year. Survived by her husband of 55 years, James; son Michael; daughter Terri-Lynne and husband Lee; son-in-law Brian; brother and sister-in-law John & Heather Cowan; a team of 10 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Mina was the pillar of strength for her family. Born in Toronto, Mina came to call Nanaimo home in 1946 and here is where she built her life. Mina had a very active life becoming May Queen in 1952 and working with the girl guides in the Wellington area while her daughters attended, as well as years of volunteering for Nanaimo Track and Field. Her love of gardening led to many years as treasurer of the Orchid Society of Vancouver Island. A long time member of the Nanaimo Power Squadron, many years were spent on the water sailing, fishing and beach-combing, eventually coming to own Zaca which she dearly loved. While on their many travels, Mina would always help the less fortunate around them in hopes of helping them have a better life. Her final years were spent supporting and guiding her family, Mina will be greatly missed.

There will be an open gathering for family and friends at the Nanaimo Yatch Club, 400 Newcastle Avenue, Nanaimo BC on Saturday, October 27th from 1-3p.m. All are welcome.
