April 7, 1932 - March 1, 2021
Gustav Michala Kelm, known to his friends as Mike, passed away a few weeks short of his 89th birthday. Mike was a competent golfer, expert wood carver, fair gold panner, mediocre hunter, and decent fisherman who loved the outdoors. He had a knack for fixing things, building, welding, and coming up with creative solutions to make life more convenient.
He planted flowers every spring and played a game of solitaire in the morning to determine how lucky the day would be. In his later years, Mike wanted everyone to eat local salmon from his freezer instead of "flatlander" food.
Mike was born in Humboldt, Saskatchewan in 1932. His family later moved to the Pipestone area of Alberta where they farmed. Mike attended the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology and received his heavy duty mechanic certificate. He worked in the oil and gas sector up until his retirement.
Mike loved travelling to British Columbia during summer vacations and made Nanaimo his home after retirement. His outgoing personality and ability to strike up a conversation with anyone will be missed.
Mike made wonderful friends in Nanaimo, most notably Dennis and Hazel, Sandy and Gloria, and Aoki and Ichiko. He is survived by his son Stuart (Cheryl Wold), his sister Evelyn, brother Henry (Bea) and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Gustav and Martha, his ex-wife Marjorie and his brother-in-law Ed Madu.
Cremation has occurred and a grave side service will take place in Edmonton at a later date. Donations may be made in Mike's name to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of one's choice.
