Michael (Mike) Vaira passed away suddenly on Saturday April 14. Until his retirement he was a teacher in Nanaimo Schools, mostly working with troubled students. Prior to that he taught in the Northwest Territories.

He received his teaching degree from Brandon University where he was a star on the basketball team. During his tenure at Brandon, Mike won many awards and was the first basketball player from Brandon University to be named to the All Canadian Team.

In addition to teaching, Mike was a respected musician. He played lead guitar and sang with several area groups and performed at many local venues. This spring he released his first CD, Rootbound. https://mikevaira. bandcamp.com/

Mike was well known among the local fishing community. He was always eager to teach others the finer points of the art.

Mike is survived by his mother Barbara, children Mario and Jessie, and grandchildren Aria and Zai.

A memorial will be held at a later date.
