MICHAEL KALNICKI
January 1, 1923 - October 21, 2012
Michael passed away unexpectedly, at his home, on Sunday, October 21, 2012 at the age of 89.
Michael will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Lorie; his sons: Darrell (Alison), Wade (Cynthia) and Avery (Cara); and his grandsons: Spencer, Andrew, Logan, Jesse; and close friends Christine, Pat and Don.
Michael was born in the Ukraine and came to Canada in 1948. He worked his way across the country, always willing to take on new jobs and adventures in new places. He met his wife of 52 years in Norman Wells in the NWT. They moved to Edmonton where they were married. Settling into Nanaimo in 1962, together they raised their family of three sons. Michael’s devotion to animals, especially to the birds in his aviary and the pets he adopted, will always be remembered by the many hours spent in the kitchen preparing the food and cakes for them, caring for his menagerie. Mike loved all animals so much that numerous strays, (cats, pigeons and raccoons) which were lucky enough to find their way to his backyard quickly became loved family members. He enjoyed being in his backyard, tending to his gardens and creating new yardscapes.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to those who have offered their support at this time. At Michael’s request, there will be no funeral service. To honor Michael’s memory, donations may be made to: The Nanaimo & District Branch of the BC SPCA.
