December 25, 2016

Melvin Leonard (Len) Moore

August 18, 1938 – December 25, 2016

Len was born in Minto, New Brunswick to Mae & Camille Moore on August 18, 1938. He passed away peacefully on December 25, 2016 and will be sadly missed by Mary, his wife of 56 years; their four children, Cindy (Glenn), Darren (Jennifer), Shawn (Bonnie), Lori (Bruce); and nine grandchildren, Amber, Autumn, Jared, Jordan, Brett, Colby, Jayden, Connor, and Devin. He also leaves to mourn his passing his three brothers in New Brunswick, Merle (Dot), Malcolm (Juliette), Cecil (Tina); three sisters-in-law, Elsie, Doris, and Bev; and several nieces and nephews.

Len joined the RCAF in August 1956 and his first posting was in Winnipeg where he met and married Mary on May 28, 1960. Greenwood was next, briefly, as the Search & Rescue squadron was transferred to Summerside, PEI. He also had a 6 month tour in Egypt with the United Nations Peace-Keeping Force before being transferred to Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. Len mainly served with Search & Rescue Squadrons and retired to Nanaimo in 1988 after 32 years in the Armed Forces. In Nanaimo he worked a further 12 years in security with the Corps of Commissionaires, mainly at the Pacific Biological Station, Dept of Fisheries & Oceans, retiring in 2000.

Len was an avid bowler and fly fisherman and enjoyed travel, get-togethers with family and friends, and especially visiting with and doing special things with the grandchildren. We have wonderful memories of our family times and there will be many amusing stories to relate at future family gatherings. We will all miss him so very much.

Thank you to all the doctors and staff at the Nanaimo Hospital and The Health Care Centre for their kind and compassionate care over the last 3 years, as well as the Palliative care staff who were all wonderful.

There will be no service per Len’s request, but there will be a family gathering at a later date. If you wish to honour Len’s memory, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
