In Loving Memory ~
Meg was born in Winnipeg and grew up in Fort Garry, where she attended local schools. She excelled in academics and sports. She moved to British Columbia after high school, and went on to obtain a Bachelor of Arts degree, with a major in Psychology, and a Master's degree from the University of Victoria, School of Public Health and Social Policy.
She was living in Courtney, BC at the time of her death, and working as a Mental Health Counsellor with the Vancouver Island Health Authority.
Meg was a fierce competitor in sports, loved the outdoors, and was a force to be reckoned with in any debate. She spent many happy summers in her younger years at the Hansell family cottage on Granite Lake, Ontario, which she often referred to as her happy place.
Meg faced some challenges with addictions during her lifetime, which she overcame more than 10 years ago. She made many friends during her recovery, and went on to work with people suffering from mental health issues and addictions in her employment with Island Health. She had a significant impact on the lives of her clients and her many friends.
In the words of one of her co-workers:
"Meg helped so many people, more people than she probably realized. She supervised my practicum and couldn't have been more helpful and supportive...she went above and beyond to make sure I was successful and advocated for me continually. I'll never forget or take for granted what she did for me. She had a profound effect on so many people she worked with".
Meg's family is grateful for the outpouring of sympathy and support received from so many people whose lives she touched.
Meg was predeceased by her mother Liz Hansell in 2016, her father Bill Gleason in 1992, and her grandparents, Nora and Roger Hansell and Joyce and Joe Gleason.
She is survived and lovingly remembered by her aunts, Stef Cupeiro (Paul) and Jane Hansell (Charles Dawes), uncle Thor Hansell (Nada), and her cousins Tate, Alex and Reed Cupeiro and Jocelyn, Gillian and Thomas Hansell, and last but not least, Theodore, her beloved cat.
A private celebration of Meg's life among immediate family will take place at a later date.
