It is with sadness and many wonderful memories that we announce the passing of our loving mother Maureen Young.
Predeceased by parents Pat & Joan O'Hara and husband Allan Young, Maureen is survived by daughter Heather (Paul) Gallant, sons Dave (Deb) Young, Kevin (Tina) Young, grandchildren Gabrielle, Liam, Seth, Emma, Erika, Maryn & Jaime as well as Eric, Crystal, Colin and her loving dog Levi. She is also survived by brothers Patrick (Benedicte) O'hara, Danny (Marilyn) O'Hara their families and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and their families that held a special place in her heart.
Maureen was born in Nanaimo, lived in various locations around the province but ultimately resided in Extension where she grew up. She attended Nanaimo Senior Secondary and then trained as a practical nurse.
Maureen has been the Regional District Director of Area C for the past 16 years and was the alternate for many years prior. During her time as Director she was an advocate for agriculture, forestry and the betterment of the community. It gave her great joy to ensure the region maintained its rural feel while continuing to advance it's parks and infrastructure. Maureen was a trustee for many years for the Extension volunteer Fire Department. She enjoyed serving the community that she grew up in and was passionate about advocating for her constituent's rights. As stated by a close colleague "Leave it better than you found it" and Maureen did just that.
Maureen had many passions, first and foremost her grandchildren. She enjoyed photography, genealogy, gardening, reading, writing, traveling and maintaining relationships with cherished family, friends here and abroad.
A special thank you to everyone that supported our mom with their many generous acts of kindness through this difficult time.
Family and friends are invited to share their memories of Maureen at an afternoon tea at the Cavallotti Lodge in Nanaimo on December 11, 2021 between 12:00 and 4:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers please do something special within your community in Maureen's name as community held a special place in mom's heart.
