Martha Szick, age 84, died on January 17, 2018, at the NRGH in B.C.
She was born in Hungary to Katalin Boday and Dr. Tivadar Flojhar. Martha received a degree in Civil Engineering in Budapest before coming to Canada, by herself, in 1953 during the Hungarian revolution. Martha’s determination and smarts lent itself to a long career as a customs specialist in Quebec, Alberta, and Oregon. She was Manager of Customs and Traffic with Novatel in Calgary, held the same position with JRC in Lethbridge, and retired from the position of Corporate Director of Customs with Praegitzer Industries in Dallas, Oregon in 2000.
If her work experience was not proof enough, anyone who played canasta, or rummy, with Martha could attest to how feisty, spirited and sharp she was.
Martha was an active member in the Catholic Church and regularly attended mass at the Bethlehem Centre in Nanaimo.
She is survived by daughters Veronica and Carolyne. Martha was blessed to have a number of close friends and a caring church.
Martha’s remains were blessed at Bethlehem Centre’s weekly service on Saturday, January 27, 2018, where there was a brief celebration of her life.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made, in her name, to the Benedictines of Nanaimo, who were dear to her heart.
