Martha (Mattie) Jones age 97 years passed away peacefully at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital on September 1, 2019 surrounded by family and caring nursing staff.
Predeceased by her husband Stanley Clifford Jones years earlier, Martha and Stanley are once again reunited.
Martha had a long and interesting life. A proud, independent, adventurous, Scottish lady she loved to travel the world. Over the years Martha regularly made the journey to Scotland to visit family and friends and in the winter months to Hawaii, to get away from the snow and cold. Martha also visited Greece, Italy and on one occasion the magnetic North Pole. She often used her North Pole adventure as an opener to get a conversation started. Later in life health issues prevented Martha from travelling or she would have been on the move to her last days.
Martha embraced modern technology, taking computer courses so that she could skype with her niece Muriel in Scotland and keep up with family activities in the UK.
She also used e-mail and Facebook regularly and searched genealogy sites to gain more knowledge about her roots. She was always interested in the background of others.
In Canada, Martha leaves behind her daughter Gloria Somerville, son-inlaw Ian, daughter Janet Jones, grandchildren Janet Flynn, David Somerville and Phillipe Scott Jones along with great grandchildren Carson, Jackson, Dawson, Jenna, Preston and Elsie. She will be missed.
The family would like to thank the caring staff at Nanaimo Senior's Village where Martha resided for the past five years, for a pleasant stay. Martha made many friends at NSV and she enjoyed her ocean view and tending to her balcony garden. A special thanks also goes out to medical staff at Nanaimo Regional Hospital for their professionalism and their kind and caring attention.
A family gathering is planned for a later date to spread the ashes. At Martha's request there will be no formal service.
