October 19, 1926 - February 28, 2019
Les Mitchell passed away peacefully on February 28 at the age of 92. He was predeceased by his wife of 70 years, Elizabeth (Betty) Mitchell. He leaves behind his sons: Terry (May), Reid (Nadija), Brad, Russ ( Donna Jean) and daughter Leslee (Danny), along with numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and a great great grandson.
Les was an iconic hockey player who grew up in Nanaimo. His hockey ability earned him contract offers with the Montreal Canadians and New York Rangers. He was best known for his defensive skills, playing with the Nanaimo Clippers and Nelson Maple Leafs. After his playing days, he became a highly regarded coach for Nanaimo Minor Hockey. First and foremost Dad was a family man. He enjoyed all our times together, whether it was at the rink, fishing, or family gatherings. He leaves behind many fond memories. He was quite the guy!
The family would like to thank Dr. Zuccaro and the staff at Dufferin Place (Arbutus Wing) for their loving care. At his request there will be no formal service, however, the family will gather to celebrate Dad's life and honour his memory at a future date.
