With heavy hearts we announce that Kenneth MacLean Milne passed away peacefully in Nanaimo on May 14th, 2022, surrounded by loved ones.
Born on March 14, 1947 in Montreal, Quebec to Don and Violet Milne, Ken has lived in Nanaimo since he was 3 years old. Growing up with his parents and his beloved sister Heather in Nanaimo, Ken attended Fairview Elementary School and then Brentwood College School, graduating in 1965. Moving to Vancouver to attend the University of British Columbia, Ken obtained Bachelor degrees in geography and physical education and was also a member of the UBC Tennis Team. One of his favourite memories was lying on the summer grass of the UBC campus, reading his books. Coming back home to Nanaimo, Ken worked with his stepfather Norm as an optician at Henderson Optical.
Ken was an active sports enthusiast all his life, working as a tennis instructor at Nanaimo Parks and Recreation, Port Moody Parks and Recreation and as a tennis pro in Lethbridge, Alberta. He played at the Nanaimo Golf Club, Westwood Tennis Club, Beacon Hill Park and Bowen Park, enjoying both the sport and the friends he made along the way. Ken loved travel and sports, especially golf and tennis.
He won many tennis tournaments, including being the Nanaimo City Tennis Doubles Champion 1968-70, Gold Medal Winner for Men's Singles Tennis at the Alberta Summer Games in 1975, Westwood Tennis Club Singles, Doubles, Mixed Champion in 1981, 84, 86, 89-91, #1 Ranked in Men's Singles under 35 for Vancouver Island Tennis Association in 1982, Gold Medal Winner for Mixed Doubles Tennis at the BC Summer Games in 1990, #1 Ranked in Men's Singles under 45 for Vancouver Island Tennis Association in 1992 and travelled to Brisbane, Australia for the World Masters Games in 1994. He was also the Gold Medal Winner for Men's 55 Doubles for BC Senior Games in 2004 and Gold Medal Winner for Men's 60 Singles for BC Senior Games in 2008.
Ken was a kind and gentle man, with quiet humour and strength that remained to the end.
Ken leaves behind two daughters, Alyson Aitken (Clay Aitken, mother Lynne Cowan) and Laura Milne (mother Joan Miller), and two grandchildren, Carter and Quinn, along with many loving family members and friends.
To respect Ken's wishes, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Departure Bay Elementary School library.
