Ken Ward

June 12, 2009

January 7, 1930 - June 12, 2009

KEN WARD, loving husband of Berniece, died in her arms suddenly on June 12, 2009. He is survived by daughters Cherylynn, Arlene (Tom), Diana (Jim); grandchildren Devon, David, Codie, and Ashley; and Bridget Anne, his four legged companion who still sits by his chair.

Ken was born in Nanaimo on January 7, 1930 and was predeceased by his parents, Chick and Rene Ward. Ken left school as a teenager to be a commercial fisherman and owned his first boat at the age of 18. He then went onto a career as a journeyman electrician. In his late thirties, he returned to high school, completed his teacher education at the University of BC, and worked as an Industrial Arts Teacher until his retirement in 1988. He never had a job that he didn’t like.

Ken had the exceptional ability to apply inventiveness and common sense to everything he and his family did. From organizing back-to-school parade entries to making sure Mum had an aviary in her classroom at Park Avenue School. Family life included summers living in our polka dotted cabin at Indian Bay to using rope tows and T-Bars at Green Mountain in the winter. He always made sure his family had the daily resources to enjoy a fulsome life.

The family would like to thank the 911 staff; Paramedics; Fire Fighters; RCMP; and Coroner for their thoughtfulness during this heartbreaking event.

The family wishes to remember Ken in a quiet, personal manner, hence there will be no memorial or church service. In lieu of flowers the family would like donations in Ken’s name to the BC Cancer Foundation, 2410 Lee Avenue, Victoria, BC V8R 6V5, for research related to Mantle Cell Lymphoma.
