Rice, Kathleen (Kay)
January 3, 1933 – September 2, 2010
It is with great sadness we announce that Kay passed away at home surrounded by her family. Her strength and love helped guide us through her last two weeks.
She is survived by her best friend and partner Jack Bready; daughters Kellie (Dennis) and Terri (Jim); devoted granddaughter Shaelyn; sisters Phil, Nora (John) and brothers Tom (Mary) and Frank (Kay); brother-in-law George (Loraine); sisters-in-law Detta (Robbie), Bev and Nola (Peter), as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Kay was born in Castlebar Ireland, one of seven children; she left home to train as an RN in England. Once she completed her training she set out on her great adventure and immigrated to Canada, she worked as an RN in many hospitals across Canada and finally settled in BC. Kay continued her education while working full time and raising a family; she became the first Administrator of Dr. Helmken Memorial Hospital in Clearwater BC and later moved to Nanaimo as Executive Director of the Kinsmen Child Development Center where she worked until her retirement in 1988.
Don’t cry because it’s over.
Smile because it happened.
— Dr. Seuss
There will be no service as per Kay’s wishes.
