In Loving Memory (1932-2024) ~

Julius Arkos passed away peacefully October 25, 2024 in Nanaimo at the age of 92, with family by his side.

Predeceased by his beloved wife of 49 years, Julia, he is deeply missed by his children, Julius Jr. (Helen), Greg (Gail), and Julia Jr. (Matt), and by his grandchildren, Logan and Erik.

Born in Budapest, Hungary, Julius was studying to be an actor when he met Julia, who was studying ballet. Julius went on to work in theatre/film/TV, while Julia worked as a prima ballerina/choreographer/artistic director in dance. They were married in 1952, and had their first child, Julius Jr., shortly afterwards.

In 1965, Julius and Julia fled Hungary with only Julius Jr. and a few small suitcases. After asylum in Vienna, they came to Canada and built a new life in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Gregory and Julia Jr. were born. Sacrificing all they knew to secure a better future meant Julius giving up his profession; he instead worked for CN Rail until his retirement.

Losing Julia in 2001, Julius once again started his life over, selling the family home to move to Nanaimo in 2007. This third chapter of his life gave him a renewed sense of purpose, entwined in the daily life of his grandchildren and helping with their busy household.

Julius swam almost every day up until his 90th birthday. He loved nature and spent many hours walking at Westwood Lake. Personal connections were important to him; he always exchanged kind words with the people he encountered. He always remembered to send cheerful birthday greetings to family and friends. He was funny, warm, charming, and strong-willed. Julius loved Beethoven and The Beatles, his family, and the simplicity of a summer's day when he could bask in the sun for hours.

The family wishes to express deep gratitude to the incredible nursing teams at NRGH's Cardiac/Internal Medicine and Palliative Care Units.

Anyone wishing to honour Julius' memory is encouraged to donate to the Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation in support of the Palliative Care Unit.

A private family memorial will be held at a later date.
