On September 20th, 2020 Julia "Judy" Szasz (nee Csorgo), aged 97, died. Now she is reunited with her beloved husband Louis, dearest sister Elizabeth Demeter and all her loved ones who have gone ahead.
Judy came to Canada from Czechoslovakia at 10 years old with her mother Maria, and older sister Elizabeth to join her father Istvan on his homestead in Spiritwood Saskatchewan.
She attended school and learned English with courage and determination. Her mother taught her the art of homemaking and she was content in this role all her life. She married Louis and moved to Nanaimo in 1945.
She was widowed in 1965. Soon after, she and her sister, also widowed, shared a home together and a deep bond of love and respect. She and Elizabeth maintained lifelong connections with their loved ones and family both in their birth country, and in Saskatchewan.
Judy had the gift of hospitality. Her home offered delicious food, good company and beautiful treasures. On prominent display were her own intricate works in petitpoint and needlepoint.
She was also known for her skills as seamstress, sewing gowns and wedding dresses and tailoring. She made all her own clothes and her creations were stylish, durable and long-lasting. She was never idle. She regularly donated hand made items to those in need and helped raise funds for charity with her much loved church family at St Andrews Presbyterian.
Judy's deep faith and abiding love for God was reflected in a life of devotion, gracious service and kindness. Judy spent her final years at Dufferin Place, where she received gentle care and attention from the wonderful staff. Though in cognitive decline, she still reached out to comfort and befriend those she recognized as lonely or suffering.
Though tiny in stature she was a mighty force of Love and Light in this world.
An interment service will take place at Bowen Road Cemetery, 1 pm October 1, 2020.
