It was with great sadness we said goodbye to our dear mum, Joyce Smith on March 1, 2011.

Joyce Elizabeth Smith (Shaw) was born in Nanaimo on September 12, 1922.

Joyce was predeceased by her beloved husband, Bill, in 1998 and her sister, Catherine, in 2010.

She leaves her three children Lesley (Rick) Manning, Ward (Lorraine) Smith and Catherine Jane (Dan) Burden and two grandchildren, Alexander and Elizabeth Burden.

Joyce was voted Nanaimo May Queen in 1935. After graduating from John Shaw High School she went on to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Victoria to become an RN. She practiced nursing for several years in Nanaimo. She married William (Bill) Edward Smith in 1948.

Once her children started growing she devoted herself to her family, their many pets and her wonderful yard. Joyce was an avid gardener, growing fruits, vegetables and flowers.

After they retired from the Occidental Hotel, mum and dad enjoyed travelling and cruising, and spent many happy times with a close circle of friends and family.

We wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to the staff of Malaspina Gardens for their compassion in caring for our mum and helping us during this trying time.

She will be missed by all she touched. There will be no service by our mum’s request.

Because of mum’s love of animals please feel free to contribute to the SPCA.
