Dudley, John Howard

May 2, 1928 ~ February 17, 2010

With great sadness the family of Dr. Jack Dudley announces the passing of this wonderful, caring man on February 17, 2010.

Jack was raised in Nanaimo, which was then just a small town, and when he graduated from John Shaw High School he continued his education at UBC. He was never swayed from his ambition to become a doctor, so when he was accepted as a student in the first medical class at UBC it was the first step in achieving his dream. The opening of a medical faculty was a history-making event for this university and one that is remembered and celebrated.

After interning in Detroit, he returned to Nanaimo with his wife, Marjorie and their baby daughter, Heather, to join the Meneely and Brown clinic. Though he had offers to join other hospitals, he wanted to work in Nanaimo and here he practiced for 44 years.

The field of medicine and his family were his primary focus but he also found time to increase his knowledge and skill in other areas. He enjoyed a wide range of activities throughout his lifetime – hockey, swimming, bridge, golf, and skiing to name a few (even skateboarding). He maintained an exacting standard for all he did. His caring manner and dedication to his profession earned him the respect and admiration of all he met.

The last few years brought some health problems that interfered with his quality of life but this he accepted with dignity, stoicism and courage. Our family are truly grateful to Dr. E. Cancade for his wonderful care over the years and to all his other colleagues who helped in the maintenance of Jack’s health. We would also like to thank the staff of Nanaimo Seniors Village who helped to make him comfortable in the last few months of his life, but we would especially like to express our appreciation to Annalyn Caisip, an extraordinary caregiver who gave him love and laughter over the past two years and to Elmer Martinez who watched over him and joined him in his love of hockey.

Jack was predeceased by his first wife, Marjorie in 1977, his brother Gordon in April 2009, and his sister-in-law Thelma in July 2009.

He is survived by his second wife Audrey, his daughters Heather (George) Pierce, Diane (Ted) Boe, his son Frank (Diane) Dudley, his step-children Julia (Dennis) Dupasquier, Georgia Pinkett and David (Claire) Pinkett, his brother Robert Dudley and his grandchildren Tyler, Amanda, Marina, Jana, Mark, Kent, Warren, and Scott.

A Service will be held at Brechin United Church on Saturday, February 27, 2010 at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation, 102-1801 Bowen Road, Nanaimo, BC, V9S 1H1, would be appreciated.
