It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Howard Cone. John died peacefully on November 13 with family by his side, a month short of his 92nd birthday. John leaves behind his wife of 65 years Elizabeth(Betty), daughters Tracy and Shelly (Michael Wood) and grandchildren Megan Scott (Jarrod Byrd) and Derek Scott (Whitney Scott) and his great grandchildren Rylie, Miles and Oscar Byrd. He is also survived by his sister Lael and many nieces and nephews. John was a generous man devoted to his wife and family. He was an avid sports fan with a true love for the New York Yankees, Calgary Stampeders and the Toronto Maple Leafs. He was a master of crosswords and had a wealth of sports trivia throughout the ages. His will be remembered by friends and family for the glint in his eye, his wicked martinis and his wit and humour.
John was a long time employee of the Provincial Government and after retirement, spent many years as an active member of the BC Government Retired Employees Association as the Provincial Treasurer. He was also a long time member of the Nanaimo Golf Club and was a two term member of the golf club board, serving as the board treasurer.
As per John's request, there will be no funeral service but a private family gathering at a later date.
The family also wants to thank the nurses and doctors who helped care for John during his lengthy stay in the hospital and especially the nurses and volunteers in the Palliative care unit.
