John G. Cochrane
passed away peacefully at the age of 84, with his family beside him, on August 24, 2013.
John’s inner strength, quick Scottish wit, wisdom and genuine kindness to others will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
He was an avid reader, profoundly concerned with social and political issues. He often crafted well-considered responses to politicians and columnists, addressing both his concerns and appreciations.
John is mourned by his loving wife of 31 years, Johanna Pierik, his children Janice and Brian Alexander Cochrane and their respective life partners Jim Moffatt and Susan Bahry, his step-son Ken Viersen, his grand-daughter Layla Cochrane, and his great-grand children Kendalyn and Kaitlyn McKellar.
From many miles away, the family appreciated the prayers and support of John’s brother, Ronald Cochrane and John’s sister-in-law Diana Cochrane (Scotland), and his nieces and respective spouses: Aileen and Chris Cochrane-Wylie (Germany) and Ailsa and Richard Owen (England).
He is also mourned by Ernie and Nance Pierik, Dirk and Adrianna Pierik (Ontario), Corey and Dirk Voss (Vernon BC) and their children. He will be dearly missed by close friends Pam and Chris, Elizabeth and Michael, and others too numerous to mention, including those at his weekly coffee klatches.
John’s family is extremely grateful to all of the excellent staff at the Palliative Care Unit and the amazing Hospice Volunteers for the compassionate and dignified care he and the family received while he stayed there.
No funeral service by request.
A Celebration of Life for his family and friends is planned for September 6, at 2 p.m. at the Unitarian Fellowship Hall, 595 Townsite Road, Nanaimo, British Columbia.
A Reception follows at the Unitarian Fellowship Hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations in John’s memory to the Nanaimo General Hospital c/o the Palliative Care Unit are gratefully appreciated.
