It is with profound sadness that the family of John (Joao) Amaral announce his passing on November 28, 2019.
John was born on the island of Sao Miguel, Portugal, and as a boy moved with his family to Winnipeg, Manitoba. He possessed a lively, creative intellect, and found his true vocation as a university professor, instructing students and engaging their interest in his areas of expertise. In his own time, John enjoyed walking his little dog, read books on a range of subjects, and spent rewarding hours working in his garden. Throughout his life, John extended his strong sense of family to his children and wife by his steadfast nurturing.
John was predeceased by his father, Joao Amaral. He is survived, and will be dearly missed, by his loving wife, Shirley; beloved children, Philip and Genevieve; cherished mother, Aida; much loved brothers, Rui and Marc; and many relatives and friends. The family would like to thank the medical professionals who cared for John during his illness. They also express their gratitude to the family, friends, colleagues, and students who were attentive to John and his family.
There will be a funeral service for John at Trinity Catholic Church on December 14 at 10 am. Donations in John's memory may be made to the BC Cancer Foundation, BC SPCA, or the Nanaimo and Area Land Trust.
We so wanted you to stay, but it just could not be. Our love, always. Shirley, Philip, and Genevieve.
