"Our beloved mother, grandmother, friend and colleague will be sorely missed." It is with great sadness that the family of Joan Marion Blick (Brownell) announces her passing on Wednesday April 25, 2018, at the age of 71 years.

Joan was born in Brandon Manitoba. From there, she moved every two years, moving to Saskatoon, Grenfell and Winnipeg before ending up in Edmonton in 1959. Joan remained in Edmonton until she graduated from Ross Sheppard Senior High in 1965. Joan graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor in Education in 1969. Upon moving to Ladysmith in 1971, Joan started a long and fulfilling career with the Workers Compensation Board. She became a Case Manager and also took on additional roles within the Board such as Shop Steward. Joan took her responsibilities seriously, as delivering her best effort to her clients, colleagues and her union was always at the forefront.

Joan lived for her family and grandchildren. She was especially fond of catering to her grandchildren, ensuring all their wants and needs were always met. Her patience, compassion and love were unmatched and will be greatly missed by her loved ones.

Giving back to the community was extremely important to Joan. Joan was an active member of Canadian Federation of University Woman for 35 years. After joining in 1983, Joan took on several different roles over the years within CUFW Nanaimo, including secretary, treasurer, and Co-President. At the time of her passing, Joan was the Chair of Advocacy, Coordinator of Communications and was a member of the Scholarship Committee. Joan helped to coordinate activities such as the Woman's March and 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. Within CFUW Nanaimo, she also participated in club interest groups, including reading groups, food groups, and cards and crafts group.

In short, Joan was always willing to contribute her time, energy and donations to CFUW Nanaimo initiatives. Joan was committed to the values and mission of the CFUW to not only improve the status of women and girls but enable women to effect positive changes for a peaceful sustainable future.

Joan was an active traveller, always awaiting her next adventure. She was a woman with a strong desire to see the world, but who enjoyed sharing these adventures with her friends and family. From travelling locally to abroad, to such places as Iceland, Russia, China, and India, Joan was determined to see what the world had to offer and its many wonders.

Joan was predeceased by her parents Allan and Wyn Brownell in 2014 and 2017, and granddaughter Naomi Joan Blick in 2011.

Joan is survived by her two daughters, a son, a sister and a brother. Her children Allison (David) Little of Nanaimo, B.C., Andrea (Ryan) Comber and their children Braeden and Larkin of Fort St. John, B.C., and Matt (Sally) Blick and their children Jarret and Kinley of Creston, B.C., sister Connie (Marc Boucher) Brownell and their daughter Genevieve of Boisbriand, QC, and brother Paul Brownell of Nanaimo, B.C.

A special thank you to all the family, friends and colleagues who came to see Joan in her final days. The stories shared will forever be engrained in her children's hearts and memories.
