Jenny Catherine
It is with heavy hearts and great sorrow that the family of Jenny Catherine Merkel (78) announces her peaceful passing with her family by her side on Thursday, December 11, 2014.
Jenny was born in Punnichy, Saskatchewan to Alexander and Isabella Bovaird Jan. 2, 1936. She went to High School in Punnichy and upon graduation moved with her best friend Ardle Moe to Regina where they attended business school.
Both employed at Sears Jenny met the love of her life Gaylord. They were married September 17, 1955 in Regina, Saskatchewan. In 1957 they headed west to Parksville BC and lived most of their married life in Nanaimo. Jenny was a member of St. Andrew’s United Church and Lioness Club.
Jenny is preceded in death by her parents Alexander and Isabella, and many brother and sister-in-laws which she loved dearly.
Jenny is survived by her best friend and husband Gaylord Merkel of Nanaimo, daughter Cindy Laakso (John Braun), Nanaimo, sons Rick (Carmen) Merkel, Squamish and Donald (Joan) Merkel, Nanaimo and her brother Alex Bovaird (Sylvia) of Parksville. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews who loved Jenny dearly.
She also is mourned by her six grandchildren, Hayley (Tom) Laakso, Chad (Chelsy) Merkel, Leah (Jan) Hoberg, Ali Laakso, Aislinn (Luke) Cormier and Tyler Merkel.
Jenny and Gaylord loved to go camping and spent many winters in Arizona. They loved to dance and were passionate about square dancing. We will always remember Nana’s love of her dogs.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Dr. Ehman, Dr. Denegri, Dr. Rufell, and the Palliative Care Unit for the support and outstanding care provided in Jenny’s final days.
A memorial service will be held at St. Andrews United Church, 311 Fitzwilliam St. Nanaimo, BC on December 20, 2014 at 1:30pm with Rev Wilber James officiating with tea to follow.
