Jean Craig Houston
(née Cullen)
Jean passed away peacefully on November 24, 2016 at the age of 102.
She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Lynda Bamford, Maureen Chaddock (Ken), and Craig Houston (Judy); her grandchildren, Jason, Kara (Kent), Ben, Darren, Krista (Daryl), Sasha, and Cameron (Ali); her great-grandchildren, Lauren, Kyle, and Brechin; as well as nieces and nephews.
Born in Nanaimo on June 7, 1914, the daughter of Thomas (coal miner and fisherman) and Sarah Cullen, Jean grew up in the Brechin neighborhood with her sister, Emma, and brother, Tom. She worked for the CPR Ferry from 1938-1945, during the Second World War, while her future husband was overseas. She married James Houston on November 16, 1946, and they built a home and raised their family on St. George Street. She was married to Jim for 53 years and was the anchor of the family.
Jean was a generous woman with a great sense of humour who taught us all about the values of love and respect for others. Jean was known for her endless energy, friendly spirit, and her devotion to her family and friends.
She was a landlady in the community for over 60 years and made many treasured friendships in Nanaimo throughout her life. Jean also proudly served Nanaimo through her dedicated involvement with Pythian Sisters, Daughters of the Nile, the Zora Club, and her over 50 years of service with Eastern Star. Youthful and independent into her 90’s, Jean was driving until the age of 95 and remained in her family home until the age of 100.
In honour of her 100th birthday, a celebration was held with her treasured family and friends, and she had a wonderful time.
