June 20, 1954 - September 21, 2020
Jan Donald Maltesen passed away September 21, 2020 at the age of 66. He was born in Svendborg, Denmark on June 20, 1954.
Jan is predeceased by his father Knud, and mother Paula. He is survived by his loving wife Mary Ellen of 40 years. Also survived by daughters Crystal (Mike) Hansen and Michelle, brothers Pete (Viv), and Ole (Hanne) and sister Kim (Terry) Cormons, brother in law Bob (Kathy) Stobo and many nieces and nephews.
Jan lived a full life. He was a commercial fisherman for 28 years enjoying the challenges of the ocean and the camaraderie of the fleet. He started as a troller, was involved in herring fishing, then became a dragger his last 11 years.
Life after fishing wasn't a true retirement. He bought residential then commercial properties and was an excellent landlord; tough but fair. Jan loved golfing, becoming club champion at Cottonwood in 2005. Hunting was important with many male bonding trips. The ultimate bag was a record Roosevelt elk in 2014.
He felt fortunate to cruise the world from Asia to Istanbul, and the Baltic to the Cape Horn, and many places in between. Pleasure boating and sports fishing were his passions, travelling our beautiful rugged coast with wonderful friends, including his two furry best friends, a dream come true. Jan was generous, kind, humorous, and strong willed. He taught us well. We will surely miss his huge presence.
