May 12, 1937 – October 15, 2020
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of James (Jim) Calvin. He passed away on October 15, 2020 with his loving family by his side.
He will be remembered and dearly missed by his devoted wife of 63 years, Patricia, sons Terry, Teddy and daughter Diane Maibach (Mario).
Jim leaves behind six grandchildren, one great grandson, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Jim was born, in Nanaimo, on May 12, 1937. He lived the majority of his life in South Wellington. He worked for the local pulp mill for 42 plus years, initially on mill construction, later in operations but primarily as an Instrument Mechanic with the Maintenance Crew.
In his spare time, he enjoyed lending a helping hand to his children and he was a father we could always rely on. Jim was an avid outdoorsman with a passion for hunting, fishing, scuba diving, and camping.
Many trips were in Western Canada in the station wagon with his family and travel trailer in tow. Jim also enjoyed travel and visited locations all throughout North America, Hawaii, the Caribbean, Thailand and Indonesia.
Later in life he was fond of cruise ship travel. During his life, Jim was committed to the South Wellington community as a District Trustee, volunteer fireman, former South Wellington Recreation Commission member, softball and badminton coach. He was very involved with the Nanaimo Fish and Game club, Black Powder and Archery Sections. Jim was a 55 year Brother of the Ashlar Lodge as well.
Heartfelt thank you to the medical community, especially Dr. Van Rensburg and the doctors and nurses of NRGH Palliative Care unit. Jim spent his final months at home in his family’s care with support from the medical team.
Jim’s explicit wish was to not make a “big fuss” over his passing. His family honours his wish; there will not be a formal memorial service. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the BC Cancer Foundation or Canadian Cancer Society.
