James John Foley Russell was born in Montreal in 1934. His family moved to England shortly after he was born. He was educated at St. Mary’s College in Southampton, Hampshire. Compulsory national service at that time saw Jim complete 2 years in the Royal Marines. He was proud of his officer’s uniform. In 1957 Jim decided to return to Montreal where he married and raised 4 children. Life took Jim in many directions and he eventually started working for British Airways where, amongst other achievements, he was responsible for computerizing the Reservations Office. In 1976 he accepted a promotion to District Manager. This position meant training at airports around the world and relocating to Calgary, Alberta.

He had a second union and spent the next 37 years in Calgary with his new partner, Jackie. Jim loved his own and Jackie’s children and delighted in their company during the summer holidays. He often spoke of the many camping and hiking adventures they shared. He was proud of all his grandchildren and took some of them on two different holidays to Europe.

Jim & Jackie made the decision to leave Calgary in 2014 and move to Nanaimo, Vancouver Island, because of Jim’s failing health. Back at sea level and in a milder climate, his health did improve and he was very happy exploring the Island, especially walking the beaches with Jackie and their dog, Ben. He made many new friends who cheerfully suffered his sense of humour and teasing. He was known for his puns, his ability to hold a room’s attention with his many jokes and stories, his enjoyment at completing the Globe & Mail cryptic crossword and his intelligence. Jim died following a stroke in Nanaimo General Hospital on Sunday, June 11, 2017.

He will be greatly missed by all who loved him.
