February 25, 1935 - May 16, 2025
It is with great sorrow that his family announces the death of James (Jim) Henry Young, who was born on February 25, 1935 and passed away May 16, 2025. Jim was a third generation Nanaimoite and spent his early years in the old Victoria Road and then Machleary Street areas. After high school he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree at UBC, and later on a Masters in Counselling Psychology. He taught Biology at NDSS and then became a school counsellor there, and ended his career teaching at the VAST Centre.
While at UBC Jim spent his summers doing many interesting jobs, from being an orderly at Nanaimo Hospital to being cook and
deck hand on a tug boat, working on many airport runways for the DOT, working at Harmac, and doing a fur seal expedition to Alaska for the Biological Station. He loved to fish and hunt, and became an avid hiker with the Thursday Hikers, where he was known for leading his fellow hikers "bushwhacking" off trail! He loved exploring old roads and trails to see where they led, and often joined up on off-island adventures
with the Tuesday Hikers as well.
Jim loved to curl and coached the NDSS boys curling team, was a member and then president of the Chase River Community Association, was for many years a Chase River volunteer fireman including a stint as chief, and was on the steering committee that formed the Chase River Neighbourhood Plan. He was also a board member for the NLRTA and for NALT. He loved to go on long cruises and for holidays in Mexico
and Florida, but his greatest love was camping on Quadra Island with family, with annual trips to Granite Bay where his mother was raised.
Jim was predeceased by his brother Robert and leaves to mourn Shari, his wife of 61 years; children Kevin (Wendy), Derek (Donna), and Narissa (Manno); grandchildren Hayley(Nick), Colton, Chelsea, Marshall (Myshra) and Liam; great grandchildren Yvette, Evan, Aria and Abigail; sister Sandra (Bill), niece Joanna and sister-in-law Beverly. Gone but never forgotten, Jim will forever be in our hearts.
A big thank you to all the caring people at Eden Gardens where Jim spent his last few months following a stroke. In lieu of flowers a donation to the Elder's Activities Fund at Eden Gardens would be appreciated. A casual Celebration of Life will be held on July 19, 2025 at 1:00pm at the Cedar (Speedway) Community Hall.
