Hugh Pirrie
We are deeply saddened with the recent passing of Hughie Alfred (Mickie) Pirrie on August 29, 2013 in the Palliative Care Unit of Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, with his loving partner of 22 years, Joyce, and his son Jeff by his side, after a very short illness with cancer.
Born in Gimli, Manitoba, on February 22, 1947, he was predeceased by his eldest son, Hugh Alfred Pirrie in 2000.
Survived by family: Joyce Wagstaff; son, Jeffrey John William Pirrie; daughter, Patricia Marie Pirrie; grandchildren: Brianna, Brandon, Joshua and Amberley; sister, Betty Beach (Kim, Wendy, Terry, Ronnie); brother-in-law and very good friend, Leo Hebert; Teresa and Dave Pirrie (Vanessa, Cory); Joyce’s children: Warren Wagstaff (Jennifer, Jessica), Deb Sywak (Kymberley, Raechell); and many other family members and friends in both Nanaimo and Winnipeg.
Hughie worked at NRGH for over 30 years, as their painter, where he met and befriended many. Well-liked by co-workers and friends, he retired in 2008, but continued to paint the homes of many. His co-workers and buddies at NRGH were very supportive during this difficult time - both Joyce and Hughie appreciated all of the visits and laughs right up to his last day. The Oxy Gang who were also there with friendship and support, and who recently met to raise a Kokanee!
Hughie was the youngest of 12 and was very family oriented. He loved to entertain company with his specialties: lazy man cabbage rolls and BBQ chicken and steaks. If someone was in need, Hughie was there at the front of the line, the first to donate or to offer his services.
Our thanks and gratitude go out to the loving, compassionate care given him from the nursing staff in Palliative Care – you are true angels!
